Help needed with Bathroom layout

We're renovating and I'm wondering if anyone else has some insight into our layout for our family bathroom. We have a cupboard in the bottom right hand corner which we are keeping as it houses pipes and much needed storage (it can't move). Is it wrong to have the shower door opening where the main door to the bathroom is?

I wondered if we should move to the bath to the the left or keep it centred? Doe that then mean the space either side the bath is wasted.

Have you seen a bath that you like? You can get lots of styles and sizes - so this would have a big impact on the design. A standard bath is usually 1.7m long, but can be shorter or longer. 1.7m would give you about 45cm of space each side - and you are highly unlikely to use that!

Likewise the shower - any ideas on what kind of size or style you want?

Ah yes - I thought we'd go for a 1600 bath as it's mainly the kids that use these days. Then the shower I was going to keep small at 800 x 800. We have a 1600 walk in shower in our ensuite so this again is for the kids and guests more than anything. I hadn't thought of it like that.

Perhaps if we push the bath to the left hand wall next to the toilet and get a J bath there is room for a double sink. Hmm - back to the room planner.

Hi All - taking on board your comments I have come up with three variations. Of course would love your comments! The distance from vanity to WC in plan 1 is approx 60cm - it could be made a bit more. This falls within the guideline you posted (23inches). More space could be created by making the shower a bit narrower (shown on all 3 plans as 1m wide (39 inches). I don't think there is quite enough space to divide the room and the problem with the idea of the bath right in the middle is that on a practical basis we would have to walk around it on a daily basis to get to the shower! Could quickly get very annoying!

All good advice above. I know that you'd ideally like two sinks, but I don't think you have the space for them. If you choose a shower approx 1.5 x 800 and a single sink, you still only have around 65cm to the sink and then 65cm from the sink to the bath. It's not a lot. You need to plot the plan on the ground and then use paper etc to reflect the bath, shower, sink, toilet etc. You will soon see that it's going to be very crowded with a double sink. If you go for the double sink, you've got around 12-14" in front of the shower and the same at the bath end, it will look crowded. The storage can go at the end of the bath, have a single sink because you've got some space to walk about. Think about building the wall out slightly at the end of the shower by the toilet to create privacy. Put your plan on the ground and physically walk around it.

The toilet was going to stay in the current position. Bath along the back wall and a basin maybe on the right hand wall. I'm just struggling for ideas and don't want to start the first fix plumbing until I'm entirely sure on layout Thank you for your response :)

Query - why does the back wall of your shower have a slanted bit at the bottom? Is there something behind that, and under your storage area, that would mean you can't use all that back wall? If there's nothing there, and no problem with that corner, then: 1 - You could leave the bath where it is. Upgrade the panelling around the base and maybe put a little door in the panelling for under bath storage of cleaning stuff etc. Maybe even upgrade the bath itself too? And then move the loo to the back left corner, facing the window. Move the basin closer to the new loo position, and further away from the door, and build a low storage 'wall' all along that side wall, with the basin on it, and the loo also. The top of that new 'wall' will be a shelf for putting nice candles etc. Then, mirror all across that side wall, above the shelf, to increase the light and spaciousness. This is what we had in our tiny bathroom. It's more linear looking, with the main items on opposite sides of the room. 2 - Move the bath to horizontally across that back wall as you suggested - if space allows for the length of the bath. I think there will be enough space for a shower, even with sloping ceiling. Try standing up in the bath, and see if there is room above the tallest person's head. If you attach a pump to the shower, you will have enough power for a good shower. Maybe use mirror type tiles on the back wall above the bath to reflect light, and increase space. Move loo further into the room. Consider putting basin beside loo if there's enough room now, under the window and connecting them both, with a similar streamlined idea to above. This will square out the room a bit, leaving central space. You will also have a little space then on the left side where the sink was. Maybe a towel ladder could go there, or nice storage basket for loo rolls etc. 3 - Go and talk to Carolina in the Tubs & Tiles in Sandyford, in Dublin. She's amazing, and is a qualified architect, so she really understands space. She re-did our tiny bathroom. It looks amazing and has already won a prize! We took out the bath for a walk in shower. Which is my next suggestion to you! Even if you have small toddlers etc - you can always get a big plastic basin for baby bathing for a couple of years, and leave it in the shower. We left the sink and loo along the left side, and they're connected with the type of shelf I mentioned above. Good luck!

Also - where is the soil pipe? Can the toilet be moved onto the opposite wall next to the built in cupboard?

The cupboard is internal so toilet has to be on the wall it is as that's where the soil pipe is. I think modern and easy clean is my aim so avoiding hard to reach/clean areas. So those 45cm side bits if I had a freestanding bath are not going to cut it.

Also is it not the done thing to have a toilet next to the bath?! In previous houses it has been loo basin bath but because we are trying to get the shower in there it seems that is the best place for the toilet to go.

I find that a toilet next to the bath is a great place to sit (lid down!) if you have young children to bath. A 45cm gap could be a good place for a laundry basket?

Yes - I just read this - perhaps I should look at it as a seat for bathtime!! And laundry basket is a good shout.

Be careful on that seat sitting on it while the kids are in the bath. My son has cracked 2 loo seats doing that 😂😂😂.

Personally I would move the bath over to the right and put the loo to the left of the bath. (the soil pipe can run to the left to the wall with the main stack).

That way you can have a larger shower and/or have the entrance to the shower facing the loo so it doesn’t clash with the door to the room.

The current design looks good in terms of symmetry but wastes the corner spaces, personally I would prioritise a bigger shower or more central floor space over symmetry. Also those corner spaces are going to be pretty difficult to clean!

I would also look into re hanging the door to open against the cupboard or perhaps even outwards onto the landing.

No issues with loo next to bath, just best to avoid loo staring at the door!
