which wall to wallpaper?

We want to wallpaper 1/2 walls in the living room. We have no fireplace. Which ones should we paper?

Given the shape of the room I’d actually do 1/2 of the short walls. As it sounds like a bold paper I’d paint the remaining walls in a complementary colour. I just did this to give you a very rough idea!

What’s where we can’t see it? How are you arranging your furniture? For me the furniture arrangement would be a key point. Just looking at the photo as it is I wouldn’t wallpaper the wall with the radiator on. To wallpaper should make the wall stand out as a feature and with just a radiator that is not something you’d class as a feature.

Hi Daisy. We are going to have 3 sofas. One on the wall in front of the radiator, one on the long wall at the back and the wall opposite the one with the radiator.

I'm sorry it's such a bad photo, I have been very busy and it is very late at night. I just had time to snap a photo. The paint in the corner is Farrow&Ball too. Can't quite remember where the pillow is from.

Thanks for your input @minnie101 I really wanted oak parquet with big rugs, we've had 14 years of amtico and rugs downstairs and hubby's desperate for more comfort. Due to so much needing doing next year we thought rather than installing beautiful parquet and then covering 80% with rugs we'd try carpet for this through room. I don't love the idea but it definitely saves ££££ for other things and we never use those French doors to the patio, we use another set, so don't need to worry about stepping onto carpet from outside, and I can still have my parquet in my new shaker kitchen. Is carpeting the full space a really bad idea? A large rug in sitting area and again under dining table section?

Agree with above comments. If you did use a heavy duty lining paper it would need to be applied horizontally but even then you may get problems of the texture showing through, unevenness at the joins where it won’t adhere because of the texture, bubbles or lifting because of the extra layers, and it might make it difficult to remove later on because of the extra adhesive and paint. I would either paint with a trade Matt paint so the texture is not so obvious or strip and re do.

You will all be able to see the wall with the patio doors on then so perhaps that’s the only wall that needs wallpaper. You have the panels underneath to act as a feature so I don’t think you need more than one wall doing.

Thank you Daisy, I think that's my feeling. It was just that there won't be much wall to paper because of all the windows. I was wondering whether to paper the wall opposite the windows which is the long wall.

It might depend on what wallpaper you are intending to use. The room looks quite long and narrow and if you go with a heavily patterned wallpaper it may look enclosed.

I agree with Daisy England, you want to the light to bounce off the wall opposite the door to keep the room bright. I would either wallpaper the end walls or the one with the patio doors.....do you have any idea what wallpaper you want in here?

I’ve chosen a gold paper that has big tropical leaves in bright colours. If I papered the 2 short walls opposite each other would that look odd do you think?

Ignoring the radiator I think it makes more sense to paper that end wall with the radiator.

I know it is likely to make the radiator stand out, not good. How high are your sofas? You said you'd be having a sofa on the radiator wall. If it hid the radiator I'd paper that wall.

The sofa will hide the radiator. My husband thinks that wall and the opposite short wall but I’m concerned that will draw the room in

If the door is the opposite end from the radiator wall (where it looks like the photo was taken from), I would be inclined to paper the end radiator wall and the long wall beside it opposite the patio doors. I think that would make a cosy corner. If you paper the two opposite end walls I think it could look bitty.

Yes peggysue I had wondered about doing those two walls. It appears from the feedback that there’s really no right answer to this and just personal preference.

If it were mine I would just paper that far wall with the radiator. You could also paint the radiator a dark green to stop it standing out quite so much. You could then add some large artwork or a mirror on the long wall facing the patio doors with a floor lamp or two to cosy it up along with a nice big neutral rug.

I'd do the wall that Minnie has photoshopped and also the wall facing the patio doors but I'd put a big mirror on that wall to bounce the light back. I think it will make that corner/area feel more like its own space.

I wall papered two walls to define this area as a space in an open plan ground floor. I don’t think I would have papered both walls if it was a closed off room. Personally I think one wall is better as a feature. Have you thought about papering the long wall and repositioning your middle soda to face it? Will you have curtains or blinds on your french doors? It could get very busy in that corner if you paper the end wall and have to dress the doors.

Thanks for your kind thoughts. I think we have reached a decision and that is to do one wall of the paper on the long wall. It was very helpful to get everyone's feedback and it became clear really that it is a matter of personal choice.
