Renovating Design Dilemma Bathrooms

Help needed with bathroom renovation; ideas welcome

Hi all, looking for some design advice.

We're in the middle of an apartment make-over, and we're trying to revamp the bathroom, as well.

We've seen lots of lovely ideas, all unique and brilliant, and we've made our mind to use marble looking porcelain tiles in the bathroom, white with grey veins. We're trying to achieve something modern and luxurious looking, without breaking the bank.

Bathroom has a little over 4sqm in size, and a height of 2.8m. The pipings are already done, with the sink and a radiator on the right, toilet seat in front, and bathtub on the left (which will be transformed into a shower area), as you enter the room.

1. Would larger tiles will look better? We're considering sizes of 90x90cm or 60x120cm, or so. Any suggestions on which sizes would look nicer?

2. We're considering adding a medium-dark grey accent color, similar to the color of the existing door (which has some wood-like pattern). Do you think it's a good idea to paint the door frame and the door itself, to a monotone grey or white color, if the wood pattern will not seem to fit the rest of the design?

3. A rain shower head is a must-have. Do you think it will be too high to place it in the ceiling, at the 2.8m height?

4. What do you think about having a black-tinted mirror behind the toilet seat, to break from the white of the bathroom. In the pictures below is just a grey panel, and we're quite uncertain about that. Also thinking of making that a hidden storage space. Any opinions?

5. What do you think of the bathroom look as whole? Thank you for your time! Any advice would be very much appreciated and super-helpful!

Chris. I think your tiles are a really nice choice and they will give you the classy feel that you want. Either format will be fine but the rectangular tiles fitted vertically will give the impression of greater height to the room.

Clearly it’s a matter of personal choice but I think that the dark grey accents cheapen the class of the tiles and bring the room in. If you wanted to go for a contrast, maybe the vanity unit in a dark wood effect would look more classy. My other thought is that the room is maybe not big enough for the shower set up as you have it here. I think that water will splash beyond the screen and in front of the toilet. My thoughts are keep the open shower screen but go with a plain white porcelain shower tray with a slightly raised lip or keep the flooring consistent and opt for a frameless glass door which will keep the water in. Could be just me but I like to splash a bit in the shower and I think you’ll end up with water in front of your loo.

Best of luck with the renovation. It’s going to look great.

Suspect the space above sink has at least 30cm in width? I'd get a mirror cabinet. I know it's not great as its not centred but for me, I like the idea of having my daily essentials stored above the sink inside a mirror cabinet. Otherwise, try three white shelves. They will look great with the blue wall. An alternative is wall art. Make sure you don't get canvas as the bathroom is meant to get steamy during its lifetime. You can even get three small irregular shaped mirrors to offset the 'frames'/vertical alignment with the sink. Trip to IKEA (mirrors) or the Bathstore (look up the myplan wall cabinets) I'd say. Well done on the good job!

Hi there, I think you'll be able to transform that space on a very tight budget without many problems at all. My suggestions would be as follows and are based on trying to be sympathetic with some of the nice traditional elements (door, tiles etc): Replace the lino with Palioclic Arezzo floor from Karndean (a waterproof "click-lock" floor specifically designed for bathrooms which is really easy to lay yourself. The Arezzo is a beautiful washed oak effect which is both traditional & contemporary Replace the bath panels with either plain or a traditional moulded variety and then paint this in the rich dark blue - Farrow & Ball's Drawing Room Blue or Pitch Blue, or perhaps Fired Earth's Tempest Paint the walls in a lighter grey-blue such as Fired Earth's Glass Samphire, Pale Cirrus or Pearl Ashes Remove the wood-cladding on the ceiling and plasterboard & skim it - worth getting a decent plasterer to do this, but should be a really quick way to make a HUGE improvement for modest outlay Find a really lovely period mirror, or perhaps pick up a second hand vintage picture frame (think gilded mouldings) and get a piece of mirror glass made for it Find some great curtains - you can find some great"off the peg" ones all over the place Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise! If & when you can afford it, I'd replace your tall storage unit and possibly basin with something like this from Roper Rhodes Burford range: Or pick some beautiful traditional ceramicware from Burlington. It might be beyond your budget for now, but it is always possible to get to the finished article step by step!

I would say, it's do'able, but does it work? In my opinion no. The width of the room is 3.5m. A kingsize bed is roughly 1.75m wide. That will leave you with 87cm walk space either side of the bed if you put up a false wall. Not only does it conflict with the window position because you need the depth for the wardrobe plus around 1m crouch space at the rear of the wall, plus the depth of the wall, but it means that you can't have bedside tables either, because it's not wide enough. If you wanted to add bedside tables........and my own personal view is that it looks funny without them..........then you need 1.75 for the bed, plus 1m ( for two cabinets ), that's 2.75m, that only leaves you with 37cm to walk either side of the wall to get to either the bathroom or the wardrobes. The wall could only be the same width as the bed and I just think it looks weird. If you look at the length of the room and how it will be reduced, I also think it affects that too much also. The wardrobes depth will be on average 60mc, plus 10cm for the wall and 1 metre of crouch space.........total 1.75 plus the length of the bed the other side of the wall, 200-220cm - Total could be 3.95m leaving 55-75cm at the foot of the bed to walk. You could argue that the 75cm is plenty, that's true enough, but do you want to open the door and be met with the foor of the bed right in front of you? I guessed the size of the bathroom for the interim until you measure. I'd go for something like Karen at OnePlan has suggested and don't change the bedroom, or if you want to have the shower and the bath, something like this:-I put in a wall between the walk in shower and the vanity. Put in a double vanity with two sinks, a free standing bath and the toilet. I think any more and you're trying to pack too much in and making things look crowded.

I notice some fairly substantial upright timbers on the picture so I think the cupboard can’t come out as it’s holding up the stairs. So instead I would probably have the doors taken off and it made into a niche ( couple of shelves that are not as deep as the current underused cupboard) Separately I would put the bath taps at the opposite end and get a P-shaped bath, upgrade the single glazed window and get a slatted blind and then I would replace the toilet with a space saving version and get a vanity for storage. I would also think about the direction of any flooring to make the room seem larger and I would leave much of the room as painted walls as I think having floor to ceiling glossy tiles is a little clinical. Colour wise I think whites and blues also make a bathroom feel cold and so if you are having a change I would do the same trick as hotel spas and choose stone and earth colours softened with a little wood (shelves/vanity/blind), sumptuous cotton towels, dimable warm white LED lighting and some greenery too.
