Stupid questions

when kitting out an entirely new shower room, in what order do I need to order tradesmen for: flooring; plumbing; tiling? I don't know what comes first? I guess flooring is last?
we want to fit a new front door, but it will be a couple of feet further out than the existing door. will a door/window company do what needs doing (levelling the flooring inside etc) or do I need to organise a builder also? see photo
I know these are stupid questions and I'm sorry. I just don't know how to organise these things.

With our bathroom we started with choosing and ordering fittings (that took forever!) booking builder/plumber/bathroom fitters to remove old bathroom, plasterer to make good the walls, plumber to fit new fittings, then tiling, flooring last. An electrician may be necessary if you are changing lighting etc.

if budget allows you may be better off using a bathroom specialist who will oversee it all for you. You can visit some, read reviews (Trustpilot is very honest!) or go by recommendation. We all started at the beginning knowing nothing, so no question is stupid.

I’m not sure with the door, best to get people in to quote and ask them if they can sort out the rest for you. My brother is a builder and some of his jobs are small rather like sorting out the door issues so if the door people can’t then a builder can. With all these professionals, try and get 3 separate quotes. Wish you lots of luck.

I doubt there's any logical reason for not being able to. The only thing I would imagine it's going to do is affect your heating. The underfloor heating would have to then travel through two types of flooring, thus, you may have to turn the heating up in general to achieve and acceptable ambient temperature. Just an opinion ...............i'm not an expert in underfloor heating - I'm sure there are professionals on here that are, so maybe they'll jump on the post?

The other luxury of doing it the way I did is you can have a double sink, as well as gas and induction hobs. Amazing for a keen cook (like me!). Seating on the other side of the island means that people are naturally drawn there to sit and have a drink and chat/help whilst I cook, rather than being in the cooking area. Dishwasher is on "my" side of the island, to the left of the sink for easy loading - and again having the door down means I block off access to that end, so am not bothered whilst loading. Effectively I've zoned off a cook's area. There's also a cook's fridge on that side of the island, so that I don't have to go anywhere once I am in my zone...ovens are also there, so I feel pretty self contained wven when the kitchen is full of people.

You are right. i went into BQ yesterday to see what an 800 x 800 shower was like - IT WAS TINY. I think I need a 1000 x 800 minimum and as such whipped up two layouts where one requires the toilet to move to a new party wall whereas the other keeps the toilet on the exterior wall but moved closer to the window. The second layout proposal results in a small gap between toilet and shower enclosure. Im concerned that gap might be too tiny to walk through? FYI Wall with the window is exterior Wall to the left separates bedroom Wall with the door is internal Wall with the proposed toilet is the party wall with neighbour. i have also posted a vanilla layout of the room size including window and just the door. Is one of the proposed layouts better than the other? Are there any other layouts I could consider? Layout 2 - is the gap between the shower enclosure and toilet be ok? Vanilla Layout Layout 1 - requires toilet to move to party wall.

We did 3 bathrooms at the same time and went to a local showroom that only stocked and sourced decent makes. They came out and measured up and gave us options in terms of baths, showers etc which really cut down on time. We used one of their highly recommended fitters who did everything himself apart from plastering which he sourced himself anyway. It meant we could get everything including tiles from one source which made things easier. I don't think we would have saved any money by doing it any other way.

i Pip,

looking at your picture it seems the pavement level at the front to your dpc level is one brick around the entrance. this is too low, but you cannot do much about it without lowering the pavement level.

you have a timber ground floor which is vented under the entrance door. you will need a builder to remove the tiled area and place a fitting and wall to support the new door and side lights. the ventilation needs to be maintained to ensure the timber floor is adequately ventilated. I would use an engineering brick or semi engineering brick below the door to improve the issue of moisture getting into the need timber floor.

after the step is formed perhaps you can get the dorr installed . it may be better to have the builder co-ordinate the installation as he/she can make good and manage measurement and manufacture. you can still make the choice on the door you want and the supplier.
