My roof or soffit is making popping noises, what should I do?
Problem:
I moved into my house 6 months ago. Since I moved in I have heard banging noises originating from the edge of my first floor bedroom (east facing). The noise appear to just by the eaves of the house, just where the roof meets the white soffit/fascia and black guttering. If I am in my west facing bedroom I can hear the same noises (at different times of the day)
I am sure that the source of the noise is ultimately the sun / thermal expansion, as on cold days or overcast days there is no noise at all. Of the noises I can hear there are two slightly different types
Noise 1: Bangs/Pops early in the morning as the sun is coming up at dawn. These are loud and occur roughly once every 15 minutes (annoying when I am trying to sleep at 5.30 am!)
Noise 2: Quieter pops when the sun comes out during the day. These are more frequent and will pop every 10 seconds or so for a few minutes. I have actually managed film this on one sunny day. Also with my hand I have physically felt the gutter shake as these noises are generated.
What I need?
a) Could someone advise on what they think the physical problem is e.g. guttering expansion, fascia expansion, or something to do with the roof?
b) What type of builder should I go to fix the problem e.g. a roofer
House Specification:
Builder: Bovis (standard NHBC style new build house)
End of Terrace
Year of Construction: 2012
Walls: Concrete Breeze Block and Brick Fascades

Comments (25)wow stellahome, what a grand house and entrance! I'm intrigued! Do you have many original features left in the house? servant bells maybe? :) Post some pictures for us! I am very familiar with lassco, in fact I currently live 5 mins away from there, and pop in often, they have many wonderful items which really enhance an old house. Took a couple of more pictures today of the dresser, as even though it looks very worn, look at the dovetail joint details! Comments (20)Hi Kit Kat. Personally I think the stark black and white everywhere must be horrible to live with, very visually disturbing. It must be a very old traditional cottage so I can see why your husband might insist on keeping it as is. Use the Houzz image search or Pinterest to search for limed oak cottage interiors and build up a gallery of images that could illustrate to him how much softer it would look without all that black! Removing the black would give the most authentic finish but might be a total nightmare to do, often people have to have them blasted in situ (expensive and very messy!). If he still won’t listen then it may seem odd but painting the walls a darker tone (closer to black) would help with the jarring contrast! I like your ideas four poster etc but I think that room is too small for anything like that. You could find some richly patterned fabric for the curtains and hang some as a headboard. Not sure how to build or secure that little frame to house the light, that's tricky for me (I'm not a carpenter!) but sure I'll work it out. I was actually considering a spotlight (not a downlight like the others) on the front of the fascia instead that can rotate back on itself. So couple of options to work with now....See MoreSonia
