Sitting room curtains for aged parents :)

Hi everyone, my parents have light yellow walls in a very large sitting room, and a dark brown sofa (Not the one in photo). Any ideas for curtains, please? Preferably something that provides a relaxing, and welcoming sitting room for my nearly 70 year old parents. Sorry I couldn’t get a better picture. This is an old one.

I would go with simple plain cream or pale gold curtains. If they prefer a pattern then something botanical would be nice and fresh without being heavy. Here’s some ideas

Just wanted to show you these storage cubes they are amazing storage and really help me keep all those little pieces together also it makes it so much easier to keep the room tidy. They are from ikea and are really inexpensive but if your having a play room you defiantly need these. Also I tried to find a pic with a bright rug in I think if you get a big rug some storage and a window dressing you are pretty much done. As for art work I watched a video on YouTube that I thought you might like it was children's drawings framed and another which had a long piece of string with clothes pegs on that you added children's drawings too I thought it was a really personal touch and let's be honest cheaper than any art work your going to buy

Hi so this is what I had in mind. Although it ideal I think it would be too expensive for now to remove that lone cupboard. So an idea would be; 1. Paint the walls white 2. Paint the cupboards pale grey: http://www.farrow-ball.com/paint/Paint-For-Kitchen-Cupboards 3. Get nice oak laminate floor from Homebase or B&Q 4. It may cost between £200 and £300 to fit the floor with underlay. But totally worth it. 5. Cheap grey sofa (maybe not corner sofa) or second hand sofa, max those dimensions on the plan. I bought two cheap ones from Homebase for our back room and they're totally fine. 6. Farmhouse table with bench / Eiffel chairs 7. Tv bench and side table from ikea 8. I agree with Stitched that if you want blackout, you need blackout lining; proper darkness is unbeatable for getting a decent night's sleep. Like you, I wanted blackout AND to keep the bedroom curtains looking light and airy, and we solved it by hanging two sets of curtains from the same pole, using the same rings and hooks. The back curtain is a blackout lining in very light beige, just enough to cover the window plus a *little bit* of fold; I think maybe 1.5 times the width of the window. The material is not really very thick or stiff, it's actually quite flowing. In front, we hung very pleated/gathered, gauzy white linen curtains; I think they are 3 or 4 times the width of the window. Because the blackout curtains are less wide, they don't bulk up at the side when opened and sit fairly flat when closed over the window, allowing the white linen, which is very gathered, to billow in front. I hope this makes sense -- it's actually very simple but a bit awkward to explain!

My friend has rich cream coloured blinds and they just have a grubby “smokers” look about them (God I hope she’s not on Houzz!). There are many different whites and some are textured so you can see the grain through without being dinghy.

What are your parents into - calm or patterns and rich colours?

The corner of the room in your picture looks quite unfussy - so a focal point of patterned curtains could be fine.
