What is the best hard wearing paint for a narrow dark flat hallway

I am looking to repaint a small flat where the narrow hall does not have any natural light. I need a paint that will survive scuffs etc. and I want a very neutral light colour. The carpets are creamy beige colour. The cupboard doors have been painted grey, I am thinking of painting them white. Any ideas please. I don't have photos yet.

Hard wearing paint means a trade paint. Dulux Trade Paint is popular but the ‘trade’ quality is reflected in the price.

Personally I use Johnstones paint and have found their paint better than the normal Dulux, Crown, Velspar , F&B etc.

I'd recommend Dulux Easy Care (previously Endurance) in pure brilliant white.

Finally finished the hall and the transformation is complete. Kept the doors but painted the architrave and all other woodwork (Farrow & Ball Dimity Eggshell). Walls (F & B Joa's White Modern Emulsion) Carpet is sisal. Window shutters California Shutter Co. Wall up/down-lighters John Lewis, as are the ceramic radiator shelf lights, painted to match wall. LED Panel 'skylights' are magical. Wired to an external Dusk 2 Dawn sensor via a relay (To transpose output to Dawn 2 Dusk) they are activated by two occupancy sensors either end of the hallway and only operate during daylight hours, thus giving the very real effect that it's daylight flooding in. The wall lights are for night time and if it only needs to be subdued lighting, then the remote controlled shelf lights are used. The flickering flame wall sconces either side of the old loft door are for amusement at best, but look nice. Now to find some suitable wall decoration and also fit a curtain and tie-back at the mid-point. That will allow guests who use the end bedrooms some night time privacy when using the bathroom down there. Thanks to all you Houzzers for your input and support!

Oh - those hallways are better finished and decorated than some of the rooms we live in Here goes - floor is flag-stone tiles, set in a diagonal pattern. Lovely to look at - nightmare to clean. Half-painted, half timber panelled walls. A small pillar on which hangs all our holy objects - from holy water font ( Vatican), hand-made St Brigid's cross (school), stained class crucifix (Lourdes), Holy Family brass ornament (Knock), Hannukkah menorah (from north London). A beautiful hand-crafted coat rack, designed and made by my 16yr old for Woodwork exam. Here hangs that one-size-fits-all anorak that ended up in the back of the car some years ago and has never been reclaimed. Everyone can use it so no excuse about getting wet or cold when asked to go out to car or out to bin or bring in/put out cat dishes. A myriad of sets of keys that only each owner knows what they are for. Various school-bags, lunch boxes, kit-bags, boots, helmets, hurley sticks, badminton rackets, wellies, hob-nail boots take up temporary residence in the hall until the house-fairy offers to put them away for their owners ie throw them outside the front door where she can't trip over them (amazing how quickly the owners find a proper home for their goods under the threat of a night outside!) A second-hand side board that currently houses family photographs and trophies etc on top and a motley mix of household bills, badminton subscriptions and accounts, Greeting cards and writing paper and other stationery (no biros tho!) a drawer full of hats, caps, scarves, gloves, hi-vis jackets and dog leads. A lovely print of my home county which has 1920 b+w postcards of my town mounted around it. Then there is the oil PAINTING. It is a version of 3 Spirited Horses in a Storm. It is 6ft wide, 3ft high. Has a distinctive lack of colour - brown, cream + khaki - dust colours. OH dug it out of a skip in London in 1988 + delightedly rushed home to hang it in our abode. Except we lived in a 1-bed flat and didn't have any straight wall long enough to hang it on! Undeterred he hung it on the stair-wall. So no option but to look at it. It has followed us ever since and I am heartedly sick of the sight of it. Cannot get him to part with it. How I wish it could get damaged somehow .... Any suggestions ....?

Love your cupboard! You can add some delicate accessories with colours present on the cupboard. Flowers is a great idea. For radiator, if you like having family photos as I can see from your picture you can put more but all in matching frames, again something delicate, white will look good as there won't be much contrast with the radiator.

Sisal is lovely, but I think you need to think about how to clean going forward. I'd stick to a good quality carpet for the stairs and your LVT for the Hallway. Re the LVT.......going for something with a pattern or textured look will hide the dirt. We have Karndean Van Gogh. During the day we all troll in and out constantly including the two dogs and it's great. You could go for a pattern:- Harvey Maria - Hardwicke range There are several shades here that go with your F&B Pigeon:- I like the Pear Tree Green. You could then follow with a dark grey carpet to pick up on the line around the pattern in the same colour. Or Amtico Decor also has some life and will look good in a Victorian Hallway. Lastly, do get rid of the black plastic framed pictures and red shelf...................... replace with a 'large as you can get' ornate mirror to bounce around some light from the front door, over the top of a narrow console table.

I’ve fairly recently moved to using Mylands Marble Matt emulsion. It’s a similar price to Farrow and Ball (maybe a tad more), but is bomb prove and scrubbable. 5 litres retails at £91, but I’ve discovered that Paint Depot online sell for £81 and also usually have a 10% off offer. When I bought from them, the paint was shipped direct from Mylands...

Dulux Trade diamond Matt is their really tough version - I found it to be cheaper than the Mylands if going for white or magnolia. However not massively cheaper when you start mixing colours.

A couple of homeowners I helped choose colours have. If you have decorators in, they will love you for choosing it! It’s tough and durable enough to be used on kitchen cabinetry.

P.s. Don’t rule out more colourful colours for your hallway toooo quickly. Light colours can only bounce around the light which is available to them. If there is little natural light you may find them shadowy. So sample your final shortlist in your space to see how they behave. (boards or lining paper so you can move them around, rather than directly on the wall.

Whites walls can look drab and grubby in a windowless space. I would choose a mid tone neutral (perhaps similar in tone to the carpet) but with white woodwork and ceiling.

I also agree that wipeable paints are great for removing scuffs.
