Trees along boundary - should they be the same type or not?

3 years agoIf you like a symmetrical orderly garden, then use the same trees in a row or group. You can plant pleached trees which have a neat squared off top (like a hedge on sticks) but they do need clipping to keep their shape, so require a bit of effort. One of my favourite trees, the Himalayan Birch, have beautiful white bark and look fab in a trio or in a row. They do get rather big, so make sure there are no buildings or paths around that fence line. They look particularly beautiful and ethereal during the winter when it has shed its leaves. Fantastic for wildlife too. I prefer a variety of trees, but just depends on your taste. What trees were you thinking of planting?

What windows should we choose?
Comments (56)Hi Folks. The windows are in and I love them. I chose black slim profile aluminium chamfered profile. I've been delaying posting a picture because, as you can see the front drive isn't done yet so the house isn't set off very well in its surroundings. To be clear, the windows we replaced were already Everest replacement windows from the late 70's early 80's I'd guess. The only original glazing we had being external Crittal doors that were ffffreezing, so they have gone and the Crittal stained glass windows by the front door and chimney breast, which we've kept, though they need painting black to match the new windows. We haven't replaced all the other non-original windows, but will aim to do so over the years, when the cash flow improves. I managed to persuade my husband to at least agree to all the first floor front elevation windows being replaced, so now they are all the same when you view the house from the street. The windows of a brick built sun room, front right, that you can partly see, are probably going to be removed, to make that area part of the garden rather than the house. One thing I would say is that we are having a bit of trouble with condensation on the outside of the new windows, which was unexpected and made me quite miserable at first. It turns out we're a bit unlucky, it's a known, but not extremely common, issue with such good thermal insulation in modern double glazing and it depends on the aspect of your house and the dew point. Our front elevation is west and exposed, so cold in the morning resulting in condensation and our view being foggy until the air temperature rises. I've attached a poor photo to show a mild version of what I mean, it can be a lot denser and we have far reaching views from the upstairs windows, so disappointing. But I've got over it. The main plus point is that the rooms with new replacement windows are so much warmer than the ones which still have the old ill fitting wood and aluminium windows. I'm also really pleased that we chose the windows to be black on the inside too. A neighbour up the road has black on the outside, white on the inside and I think it looks really odd when the windows are open. Finally, all the houses on our road are completely different, so there is no uniting feature that ties them together, our windows couldn't clash with the windows in the other houses as they are all individuals, though I suppose you could say they are all clashing, but as we are fortunate enough to be in a big plot with the houses set well apart I don't get that sense. Comments (35)Trees, plants, vegetables and wildlife. Luckily I have an enormous garden, which includes a hedgehog, lots of slow-worms, frogs and toads, and under the eaves of the house roof live scores of house sparrows, while the old field hedge to the south provides hospitality for many bumblebees, blackbirds etc - even a wren. Under the lawns hide lovely, silky miner-bees... There are two compost heaps and I spend a lot of time bringing home cuttings and then nursing them into life. Of course the garden is masses of work each year and I am 69, but this is as close to living on planet earth as you can get in today's crazy world. There is no silly internet-of-things in my garden; and apart from sunlight, moonlight and the odd flash of lightning, it only sees the occasional use of a torch or led headlight. I guess some of the worst things that can spoil your garden is a nearby stinking barbecue or neighbours who burn stuff in black polythene bags; (or hire a sound system for their birthday) or the unsustainable racket of a MOD fighter jet or helicopter beating the air! Comments (2)1/ A cantilever will NOT impact on the foundations. The strength is in the cantilever itself. It is NOT load bearing. 2/ they have to hire at least three consultants. Architect at this stage, then structural engineer and party wall surveyor AFTER planning. Between the 3 of them, you will be able to ascertain the structural impact which is usually zero. 3/ More importantly is the visual impact, and that must be resolved at this stage (design and planning stage). You can talk to them about this because they probably have a readymade reply from their architect, or you can upload photos or diagrams of the design here if you wish to pursue more advice on this from me....See More

3 years agoIf your garden style is informal, a mix of different trees will look more natural. I had the same issue as you ie. wanting to screen neighbouring houses. My garden is quite small - just over 3 fence panels wide. I have planted a standard arbutus unedo and a Acer silhouette. I planted them 1-2 years ago and so have a couple of plants in pots until the main ones get established (another arbutus and a half standard camellia).
There is a mature cherry tree to the left in my next door neighbour's garden which you can just see in the photo.
