Lighting : mains powered or not?

Hi, I am new to lighting etc and looking on BandQ, they have various lighting options but some say "mains powered" but most don't. What is the difference in difficultly of fitting them? Are mains powered easier to fit? Thanks.

Unless a light is solar powered or battery powered, it will be mains powered, i.e. powered by your electrical lighting circuit.

Hi, I suspect that most of the ones that don't say mains powered are in-fact mains powered! As to whether they are easier to fit, that really depends on where the lights are to go and how near some electrical power is! Battery lighting is a possibility but only really for accent lighting although with the low power consumption of LED bulbs they are a lot better than they used to be!

We'd like to fit a pendant light in our living room, but rather than get an electrician in to cut holes in the ceilings and walls to fit the cables, all the way to the light switch, I'm wondering if it's possible to have a floor weight and cable running to a hook in the ceiling, like the &tradition marble light in the attached photo. Is there an adapter that lets us hook a pendant up to a mains socket? I could then try attach the cable to a floor weight, and through a hook in the ceiling.

Thank you! Very clever. Hmm. I have no idea - ha ha! What are the white lights. I'm slightly concerned that the whites won't match. There are so many whites. The coppers might not match either. Could just do 5 mediums at different heights or 3 mediums and a few small - all in the striped. Not sure. They would be in a straight line as that's how the track is. What do you think might look best? My table would be going across the room and is bigger than that table so lights wouldn't be as close to the table. Do you think all stripes would be too much? Thanks for doing those ideas - really appreciate it.

In son’s house he had MK. Recommended by the electrician and he has been pleased with them. They were only white but I presume they’ll do colour choices too. To be honest in the whole of the renovation of his house (and it was gutted and unliveable when he purchased it) light sockets were the only thing he really insisted on choosing. Everything else he asked me or dad. Weird lad ;-))

UOhhhh, you're entering the Byzantine world or LED strip lighting (good luck). Its never easy with them but a few things to know are: Wattage is often not a good indicator of output; If you can, find the lumen output which is a measure of the light emitted (roughly 250Lm is equivalent to an old 25W bulb, 800Lm / 60W etc) If you can find the lumen output it will probably list it as per meter. Not all LED strips are created equal, common types are 5050's 5630's and 3528's...I have no idea what these number actually stand for but 5050/5630 are the brightest with 3528's being for accent lighting as they're slightly smaller. Take care for light colour, basic colours are warm white (3000k) like a incandescent bulb, and cool white (4000K+) like a CF or day white Number of LED's per meter is important, the fewer LEDs the less light they'll ultimately emit RGB are colour changing strips which are much more expensive and liable to fail then mono colour strips Try looking for dimmable strips, they are available but you often have to dig deep to find them. Ultimately, always (as you did) get a sample to try. Goodluck... Oh, you can try toning the output down with a filter, white masking tape can work if it's not seen to diffuse and reduce the light output.

Yes good point about some of them not saying they are "mains powerered" ! I wasn't sure if some of the ones that don't say that, were more specialised in terms of fittngs required etc.
