Re design the lounge especially the chimney breast
Comments (6)Hi. I must admit this isn't something I would probably do myself as it may close the room in. However, I would go for a low wide fire so the tv can be hung low otherwise it may be uncomfortable to watch. Build a recess for the tv and use a textured wallpaper etc to make that the focal point (I would normally say something really dark to disguise the tv but it will bring the ŵall in if you did that). I'd go for handless cupboards to keep with the contemporary feel but also so it's less busy. I would have shelves above to retain a feeling of openness or mix and match open and covered as in pic 3. Move the mirror (or buy another large one) to the ŵall opposite the window as it is increasing the feeling of space. I can't find great pics so they're a hybrid of suggestions! Another option is to have an off centre fire closest to the window so the fire isn't obscured by the sofa....See MoreLiving room thoughts on chimney breast and window dressings
Comments (14)The new fireplace is 136cm wide (old one 131cm) and 116cm high (old one 110cm). I love the look of the main wall in the picture above. What do you think of this mirror? Its diameter is 110cm. As for blinds, I like what you've suggested for the two little windows on the fireplace wall as privacy isn't an issue here. However, the main window to the front (which is massive) needs a blind for privacy. would it be a no-no to put a wooden venetian here which would mean two different blind types in one room? I'm guessing so but what to do|? This is the blind that John Lewis sell, supposedly in the same fabric as the curtains already posted, but the colours/pattern are the opposite way round. Good to put together or not? I'm still thinking little windows only - and probably to hang inside the recess (?) although I know this reduces the light....See MoreChimney Breast Decoration
Comments (14)Thank you everyone for your comments, it is really helpful. jprzym - our house is only 20 years old and is a modern bungalow. We are completely renovating the entire house so hoping to have a rather contemporary finish so this should work well with the overall look. I have looked in to wallpaper but I am not a fan of the wood/tile effect wallpapers thus far. I have a sample for a rough textured wallpaper that I don't mind.. but not in love with! sttop - really helpful to see the corner finish - and for assurance with practicality! I think perhaps getting a tiler in would be the best thing to do. Redecorate - there is some worries around this - the "chimney breast" we have isn't actually a real chimney breast, it's just been built out - would this make damage even more likely? I'll definitely check it out. I probably would only use the fireplace for decoration though! Jude - love the image you sent over - i will definitely check these out, thank you....See MoreChimney breast - creating a stylish TV recess
Comments (21)Hello, It seems to me that the chimney sticks out about 350 - 400mm into the room. That's a lot of potential space. The TV is probably 50mm deep. That leaves 300mm of space doing what? I would suggest removing the chimney breast completely throughout the house. This should not cost more than about £5,000. Then I would build a bit of stud for the TV and any other elements I wanted and gain additional space on the ground floor and first floor. If you remove the chimney on the ground floor get an engineer to design a suitable support and remember any structural supports have to be signed off by building control....See MoreDaniel
