With 4 reception rooms there must be room for a desk somewhere. Can you post a floor plan?

If you can find or draw a floorplan that would help a lot, even a rough one.

It sounds like you need to start by considering how you use the whole floor rather than just one piece of furniture, maybe we can help with that?

Your views pls: we have a large flat screen TV positioned centrally on the chimney breast (not clear on the photo), however the fireplace is offset, not central to the chimney breast. We originally fitted the TV central to the fireplace but it didn't look right as the TV overlapped the right hand edge of the chimney breast. It just doesn't look right in either position. Would it be better in the left alcove (it just fits the width) or the right alcove (which is wider) above one of the bookcases? The other consideration is the TV leads, they cannot be chased into the old stone walls. The sockets are on the left alcove. Thoughts anyone?

Hi again, Sorry family day so not a lot of time to get back! If you have the same space either side, I would be tempted to do two built in units mirroring each side. The TV could be on a bracket inside the one where it is now. You can then either watch it as it is or pull it out - this can also be a pull out shelf if you do not like brackets. We often custom design units for this exact purpose. It wouldn't need to be too deep so shouldn't get in the way of the sofa the other side. This would also hold DVDs etc. There are endless possabilities with these type of units and if you can fabricate and do the work yourself I am sure it could be stunning. I think I'd go for a sofa in that bottom left corner, width 7ft max, pull it away from the walls a little. Tv on bedroom wall And you can have a chair in line with the bedroom door but about 3ft in front angled towards the sofa. I'd choose a chair that doesn't visually fill the room. You can then have a dining table with a bench against the hall wall. Choose a bench that sits between the table legs. Alternatively you could choose a small corner sofa like this. If you're not ordering prior to moving in in try marking it all out with masking tape and I'd zone the living area with a rug

This is a subjective question. Some people like the fireplace, some don’t. It’s personal taste. I personally really like it. It brings character & warmth & a focal point. Not everyone is fortunate to have a chimney so I would embrace it. But it is what you like that matters as you have to look at it! I personally would fit the largest TV you can fit in the larger r/h alcove - let us know the measurements of this alcove? Looks from the photo like you could get a 75” there? Maybe even 80+. I’d put a floating media style unit underneath (have a look at IKEA) with LED lighting. On the smaller left side alcove I would shelve it full height, again with some soft integrated led lighting. Shelves could be wood, glass, or have chrome/brass trims depending on the style of your decor. It doesn’t all need to be centralised & symmetrical- work with the room rather than against it. We have a large pull down projector screen which is only effective when sitting at the back of the room (6 metres away). I much prefer to watch a tv screen. There is no way a 200” screen would work in this size room (sorry). The pixies would appear blurred & your eyes will hurt. It would just be silly in a small room. A 75” is still absolutely enormous & great for films, especially if you plan some clever soft/dimmable LED lighting around the room to give you that cinema feel.

We do spend a lot of time puzzling over how to use the space as it is, as well as how to change it to suit us better.. typical victorian house with kitchen stuck out the back and it is cold and dark, i have seen lots of articles here of similar where people have really opened up the back of the house so it becomes the heart of the home and also opens up to the garden. But we have become paralysed with all the options and the potential cost especially as this house being older and not particularly well maintained previously keeps throwing up extra costs.. new roof, windows and the garage is falling down next on our hit list!!!

My partner does have a little desk upstairs in a spare room where he has been working the last few months but wouldn't use after the toddler has gone to bed as she is a light sleeper... and he has been muttering about putting one in the storage room but I know no-one would want to use it as it is a small dark room that gets really very cold in winter and also smells a bit(! we need to get to the bottom of that!!). ive puzzled over fitting one into thr living room too but its an awkward shape and no obvious place for it unless we really think about repurposing it. He is very protective over "his" snug and I suspect whatever we do he will continue to hunch over his laptop on the sofa in there if i don't make the space more fit for the purpose he is using it for. After I posted I did think actually the simplest thing is just to put a tv in there somehow and a little side sofa table thing that would be the right height for using his laptop but I still worry about his back sitting on the sofa for so long . He is quite resistant to change though so I need to make sure I go in with a good proposal! Also we need to find a space elsewhere in the house for my old piano which fits perfectly in the alcove in the snug but stops us using it for anything else... the problem we find with this house and the reason we don't have many cupboards is that every wall seems to be either a door, a radiator or a sloping roof. The obvious thing is maybe to get rid of it, i think we are secretly harbouring ambitions of our daughter growing up to be a better player than either of us which is i guess a pipe dream!

I am gradually spending the time to declutter and reorganise which is really helping to think about the space better.. with less stuff we need less storage and i can learn to like this house a bit better! I was finding it frustrating I used to live in a tiny 2 bed house with more storage cupboards but now realise that encouraged me to accumulate more stuff!!!

Anyway I think you are all right with the idea we need to use our house differently, i just think it needs a complete remodel! All thoughts gratefully received for temporary fixes and the master plan!

It seems like the obvious solution would be to swap the playroom with your husbands den. The playroom is then next to the kitchen so you can keep an eye when you are in the kitchen and the playroom becomes a permanent study for your husband. You could put in an opening or sliding doors between the living room and new playroom to bring light in from the front during the day time but you are then able to close it off at night to have it snug and hide mess in playroom. It’s a good size living room, does the sofa sit along wall to hallway currently? What is this cupboard in there it sounds like it is ruining position of furniture. The alcove would be logical place for cupboard with tv and shelving above. Anyway all this hinges on you persuading hubby to give up his den so can’t help with that one! Could you post some pictures of the rooms as they are to help people commenting. Good luck!

You know now you have said that it is very obvious!!! It would solve a lot of problems! The living room being closer to the kitchen when we have guests would also be more practical.

He might resist being further away from the kitchen in the evenings but again, maybe some sliding doors between the bootroom and the current playroom could also help it feel closer even though it isn't really. Then that could be a joint workspace and a "snug" though he'd probably want a woodburner...His other argument would be that we've just decorated the living room but oh well!

I think we had some idea of knocking down the shower and incorporating it into a larger kitchen/family room across the back of the house that would be bright and open to the garden and open into the current bootroom, and accessible at the end of the hallway making the hallway feel brighter. Feels a bit ridiculous extending when it would mean we wouldnt use the existing rooms at the front of the house though! I'd had the idea of moving the kitchen to the current playroom and knocking through to the bootrom, and patio doors to the garden. I'm sure there were other ideas but we stopped talking about it when we had a baby as it was too much to think about!!

in answer to your question about the living room, yes the sofa is on the wall backing onto the hallway, there is an Edinburgh press (a narrow built in cupboard) opposite and the fire next to it. we put in a corner tv unit as it seemed like the only obvious place to put it so you could watch from the sofa but leaves a bit of wall i don't know if i can use and apart from the built in cupboard which is half taken up by the electricity meter there is no storage eg for books or to display stuff and i dont with having 2 chairs in the window it doesn't feel the best for entertaining (but not like we've been entertaining much lately anyway so maybe not important, i just always thought I should have more seating and facing each other!!)

I will try and post some pictures later, though I will need to tidy up a bit first! To think I thought I was just asking about the possibility of a slightly ridiculous sounding piece of furniture and look how much I've written!

Would you consider knocking some walls through at all? To my non professional eye, I think the whole left side of the house could be opened out to create a lovely big family kitchen/dining/play area/living room. It would then create more light into the kitchen and you can keep an eye on the little one. Hubby could then have the old playroom as his den, installing a wood burner if need be? We removed a wall between our kitchen/dining/living area and it was the best thing we ever did. We got a builder to advise if the wall was load bearing (it wasn’t) so we just chipped away at the wall until it was gone! Obviously if the walls are load bearing, it can still be done but with a builder installing RSJ’s where necessary. Your house has so much potential!

Yes I think this does sound like the way forward, thank you! our kitchen is down 3 of steps with its own roof and we need to look at how we improve the light and warmth in there... also we have a table in the midsle of it which is great but you do end up sitting surrounded with dishes and i would love to move them slightly apart but it would need to be done within that space,or we could repurpose some of it as pantry/cloakroom/utility room so we have a more condensed kitchen then the new playroom and living room could be multipurposed as divining room if, say, we hosted Christmas one year, which we couldn't do at the moment!

this is great, so many ideas firing that would be so much more inexpensive than our initial ideas which involved extending! thanks everyone for getting me thinking about this again, I'll try and draw it out later (after I've posted some pictures!)

Kirsty did you ever watch George Clarkes Ugly House series? He updates a home just by refiguring the walls to make it more usable, no extension necessary. So much cheaper!

No but he did have a programme called old house new home or something which did something in a house very similar to ours in a manner very similar to what you are describing.. my partner wouldn't even entertain the idea at that point but I think he was just not listening!
