how to lighten hall

I have a dark and dingy hallway which is currently painted white, which just makes it seem stark and cold and dull, and still dark. Any ideas for what colour to paint the hall? We will be lightening it up with improved lighting but will also be painting it. We have light oak wooden flooring and the rest of the house is decorated in blues, yellows and greys.

Mirrors! Architectural mirrors, mirrors reflect light. Make sure it doesnt reflect the coat rack.

Do you need to re-paint the walls or could you hang some interesting pictures instead? They would attract attention and make the hall look more loved.

Thanks GoWallpaper. I m off to get that paint sample this afternoon as it looks lovely. I am wondering how easy and also how expensive the panelling might be? Also wondering if introducing a dado rail, whilst perhaps not as interesting, might be a more financially viable option? Any thoughts?

Removing the console, changing the flooring and creating more interest on the walls, as mentioned above, would help. Painting (some of) your walls in your bedroom has already helped to give it a more modern feel. Perhaps you can do something similar here. I would certainly consider painting the bannister. And the doors too. Are all the door and window frames in the same mahogany kind of colour?

Yes, you are very right to point out safety issue relating to the kitchen layout. Thank you very much for the that. I will take this seriously to consider, one escape is thru main entrance, the other is to the porch and swimming pool and there is a back door escape to floor 22 as well. But this must be taken into account seriously. The current bathroom for children as you pointed out is correct, it will be much better if they have bathroom near by but there is no waste water pipes anywhere near their room, that is the limitation I guess difficult to overcome. The staircase can be smaller but my priority will be for allowing light and connecting two floors together. For the wardrobe in master bedroom, it can be more to be better but i reserved some places for putting drap and warm clothes in other scattered places in the apartment. I really appreciate your valuable time considering my floor plan and provide a lot of comments which really alert and warning me to find out solutions. Hope to receive more of your attention if that is possible. Thank you again and be stronger in this situation of covid 19. Hung

Good lighting is the way forward as you are going to do. if you do not have much natural light then I don’t think there is a miracle paint that will improve it. I do sympathise as my tiny hall and stairs are dark, but things improve up on the landing where light floods in from the bedrooms and bathroom. I’ve got Dulux Egyptian Cotton on the walls and a stripy Crucial Trading carpet on the stairs. Dulux do have a Light & Space paint which is supposed to pick up the light in a room, but I don’t know if it does what it says on the tin!

Adding ambient light too, that can be on 24/7 is a good idea - picture lights over artwork is great for this. Add a warm white bulb and will give the extra light you need while adding warmth. Or add a daylight bulb for brightness -but switch them off at night ( or it might look like a launderette!)

Should I paint the recess area under the stairs a darker colour?
Also, would recessed spotlights along the hall be enough or do I need something that would give out more light?
