Front door and garage colour decisions!

I am lucky enough to be married to a builder, and we have spent the last 10 years revamping our 1920s semi, from a full rewire, walls knocked through, loft conversion etc etc we are now ready to tackle the front of our house - it's pretty scruffy, and we need a new front foor, garage door and covering for the drive. A little while ago we couldnt agree whether to keep the porch or not....Well we have now agreed to get rid and go back to how the house was originally designed. We are planning on removing the exterior porch door and finding a new home for work coats and boots! We want the drive to be simple and low maintenance so will be going for tarmac with a small raised area in the corner for some shrubs. All the 'stuff' thats there will be moved and taken elsewhere, it resembles a mini builders yard at the mo! So I am looking for advice typically on front door colour and garage colour. From what I'm reading most people tend to match them, but if I go for a peacock blue for example, what colour would we choose for the garage. My husband says the exterior of the house is black and white and may lend itself to white again. I really like the more vibrant door colours but havent seen any with a garage, they tend to be on terraces? What ideas/advice do you have? I've attached pics of current view and idea of door colour and porch tiling.

Your house looks familiar, have you been on Houzz before with a similar dilemma? Not a criticism, just wondered! I’m glad you are getting rid of the porch as I love the arches of 1930s houses. Mine is a mini version of yours! I think front door colours is one of the most common dilemmas on here. Black is a great colour on 1930s front doors and a black garage will look very smart. You could have a black or a white garage and a coloured door of your choice such as the peacock blue. I love bold colours and my front door is F&B Cooks Blue, my neighbour has lilac and across the road is a door in sage green. . I love the black & white tiles. I have an original version of them on my front door step, so they really are in keeping. Here’s some ideas, the first is a peacock bluish garage!

I think your instinct is spot on - the grey does not go with your lovely house at all! You said yourself, 'the grey craze', why follow the herd? Perhaps you should question why you want a 'contemporary colour' instead of one of the many choices which will enhance your beautiful period house. You don't see lovely pink Suffolk cottages, or the black and white half timbered houses characteristic of some areas daubed with grey because it's the latest fad.

In my humble opinion there is not much to root this house to its 1915 origins so you have two options. To get a period style door and door furniture then I would choose a colour that helps the door furniture stand out. I prefer garage doors to match but feel that the side gate rarely has to match the house it needs to match the garden. Alternatively you could go modern with the door. If this were my house I think I would have a contemporary front door with grand proportions to suit the house. I would have a similar garage door. Lastly I might consider window boxes rather than shutters as shutters visually widen the window but window boxes lengthen them which would help preserve the symmetry you seem to be trying to achieve.

I agree with you, if you want the garage to blend in, then it needs to match in with the brickwork, or maybe it's surroundings, ie the planting. So a beige, beige/ green, sage etc I can't blow the pic up enough to see the windows and soffits / fascia's. Looks like they're a stone colour, so maybe match to that. I don't think your front door needs to match everything if you do want a bit of colour. It's a personal thing isn't it, so whatever, you like that would go well with the rest of it, a grey would work with the beige / sage/ greens etc.

Hi we changed our front door 2 years ago to Anthracite. We only got around to painting our white garage door last summer. Whilst it is not unusual to have your front and garage door different colours it does look more balanced having them the same colour. I don't have a before photo but my after pic. Also I don't notice the dirt as much.

Thank you Sonia, good ideas! Yes I've been on before when I trying to decide what to do with the porch (my husband wanted to keep it, he's very practical) but has since come round! I have actually spotted that you can get garage doors in a wider selection of colours than I first realised. But if I dont find a match then I may try the white garage door and then colourful main door...I like the sage green you have in your pics so I might try and find something like that :)

I have since seen this is a popular dilemma hence the few reposnes to this, so many have the same!!

I love that Teal you posted but also think the sage green looks lovely with the colour of the brick.

Sorry not much help, but I both would work and colour is such a personal thing. If you went for the brighter teal, I think keep the garage in white.

Definitely yes to the black and white tiles, love them!
