Flooring Design Dilemma Kitchens

Has anybody used Amtico aged oak signature flooring .. planning for kitchen diner..white v contemporary ..worried it’s abit pinky brown and there’s a lot of variation in the colour ..am considering plank layout as I find herringbone abit too busy

Hi Kate, i think plank amtico flooring in your kitchen sounds lovely but if you're not 100% on the colour find you nearest retailer and ask for two samples so you can get a better feel of the colour before purchasing

I have had so many samples! I have four planks on the floor but I just worry it’s too brown

can’t afford to make a mistake !

Hi AR, Tiles/Wood effect tiles are an option however you'd be surprised where real wood flooring can go. All our engineered/solid wood flooring is suitable for any room excluding wet rooms. The advantage over tiles is that it can be easily repaired if scratched/damaged. Also in terms of heat, if used with underfloor heating it will hold the heat for longer periods of time as tiles tend to disperse heat faster. Wood is a better natural conductor of heat as opposed to stone/tile, hence why we use them with fireplaces/barbeques etc. (please only use engineered wood flooring with underfloor heating). Not only that but if you wished to change the colour of the floor in 20-30 years it is easily done by simply sanding and applying a stain/varnish. Our flooring has been used in restaurants/bars hotels, as well as residential properties, so do not rule it out as there are many designs/styles available from standard planks, to antique boards, chevrons, Versailles panels, herringbone etc. Just have a quick look through our projects to get an idea. I'm also extending a listed period home (modern extension granted!) and wanted to re-floor the existing kitchen so that there was a good visual flow. Long story short, to put the 22mm engineered wood flooring into the kitchen would have necessitated either raising all cabinets to sit on it or some rather inelegant cutting around the cabinets. So I've gone for a mixture -Karndean in the kitchen and engineered flooring in the new extension - I managed to get quite a good match. Key factors for me were that the kitchen (albeit a fair size at 5m X 5m) is north facing so doesn't have great natural light, and the visible floor space once the table and chairs are in place is pretty small. The new extension has big windows and good natural light owing to a south-facing return and I don't plan to fill the floorspace with stuff so the flooring will be more apparent. I agree that in a period home, where you've taken pains to be authentic a wooden floor would be more in keeping and attractive to potential buyers with an eye to period detailing. Having said that I'm finding the Karndean easy on the eye and easy to keep! Cost-wise it works out similar to the new wooden flooring because I had to have the old kitchen floor ripped up and screeded to level it. Believe it or not, you can also buy modern cork floor that is soft and warm under your feet, and won't cost the earth! From harvest to installation, cork flooring is possibly the most environmentally sustainable, non-toxic and healthy of all flooring surfaces. Cork is harvested from the bark of the Quercus suber tree, more commonly referred to as a cork oak tree, which is grown in the Mediterranean region and has a life span up to 250 years. After the first 25 years of growth, the tree is stripped of its bark for the first time using traditional hand labor methods. This process is repeated every nine years with little or no affect on the health of the tree. During each harvest, about 50 percent of the bark is removed. Unlike traditional wood flooring, the entire tree is not cut down, only the outside is removed. Harvesting does not harm the tree and a new layer of cork bark grows, making it a renewable resource. Ultimately, old age is what kills the trees, not the harvesting process. Similar to growth of the raw material, manufacturing methods are also geared to protect the environment. To produce cork flooring, virgin cork bark and post-industrial waste cork from the manufacturing of other cork products is ground into small granules. During the manufacturing process, all raw materials are consumed, either for the finished flooring product or as an energy source. Production waste of cork dust and tree trimmings are burned in furnaces that supply heat to bake the cork tiles. For people with allergies, cork flooring is an ideal surface. It is antimicrobial and less likely to be affected by mold and mildew. It does not absorb dust or pollen, making it easier to rid the home of these potential allergens. The benefits of cork don’t end there. The bark contains a substance called suberin, a waxy waterproof substance present in the cell walls of cork tissue and a natural insect repellent. Suberin also protects cork from fire and when cork is burned, it does not release any toxic gasses. And to add to its bounty of riches, the insulating properties of cork flooring contribute to energy efficiency. Experts say that even a cork under-layment will provide significant insulation in the cold months.

Hi, As per previous comments the style of the house to a certain extent dictates the material / look. Here are a few practical tips to consider: MARBLE / LIMESTONE Stone looks great but you must remember all stone / marble / limestone is porous and wet feet coming in through the front door "will" mark the floor. Ensure you allow for a large door matt, not ideal from a looks point of view but it will save the floor in the long run. Also consider the floor substrate, I'm assuming you have a wood floor on wood joists ? If so, the floor will move creating cracks in your new stone floor. I would advise spending a little on preparation. Take the boards up, cross brace the beams, apply a good quality ply on them then add an anti crack matting. This will give a good and stable surface to lay stone. Also consider floor heights, if other rooms are carpet there may be a height difference. WOOD FLOOR As with the stone you need a matt area to protect it as you enter. My preference is for an engineered board, i.e.. plywood with a layer of solid wood bonded to it. This gives you a more stable material less susceptible to moving, splitting, shrinking etc. When you use a wood floor try to store it in the room for a few days to allow it to get used to the temperature / humidity before fixing it. You will never stop a wood floor expanding and contracting, anyone that tells you differently is badly informed. My suggestion is to remove your skirting, lay the floor within 10mm of the wall and add a silicon or foam filler then put the skirting back on. This looks really neat and avoids those horrible beads you see on a badly fitted floor. PORCELAIN FLOOR Have you considered a fully vitrified porcelain ? You can buy these tiles in any size from 300mm sq up to 1700 x 800mm The new ranges from Italy mimics almost exactly the look of marble / limestone / wood...... A fully vitrified porcelain is the hardest wearing material you can buy, it will allow you to use strong chemicals to clean it and you can mop it. You can also choose matt or gloss..... slip rating may be important in a hall... If you really wanted to push the boat out you can have it flow cut with a water to inlay a design... GENERAL TIP FOR HALLS My favourite trick with a hall is to put a narrow border of a contrasting material around the outer edge then infill with the main material. Example 1 Use a brown marble around the border and infill with a light cream limestone. Example 2 Use a black marble around the border and infill with Carrera marble Example 3 Use a dark timber to the border and infill with a natural oak etc. Hope that helps... I understand that, sometimes having to may samples can make a choice harder! Unfortunately its difficult to say yes go for it as it is ultimately your decision. I personally don't think it looks to pinky and i think the finish will look nice with the white units. Good luck with your decision.
