How wide should I go with Bi Fold doors and material

We are creating a new dining room which will have bi folds in. The dining table (8 seats) so around 180-220cm (not yet bought) will sit in the centre of the new doors. Our builder has recommended going 2.5m with the doors. Though we could get away with up to 3m. Do you think we should go as big as possible? I presume it will be 3 paneled
He also suggest UPVC rather than aluminum with budget. Those with UPVC what are they like, are the frames too chunky?? Or do we stretch the budget and ensure they look better.
There will be a window next to it which would be white, would we want to match this? How much of gap between the two would look ok? This picture is what I am using to help plan the space as its very similar to what we are creating.
I have included current floor plan, but we are removing boiler and that middle wall to create one big space. The other thing there is a back door from kitchen on the other left hand wall

The wall that's coming down between the rooms, is it structural? Wondered if there was going to be a beam doing directly into your doors? If so, I'd want to know exactly how low it comes, how tall your doors can be as beams can be thick! And I'd want to draw sketches to see how it lines up with the door panes etc as I'd be particular about it lining up in a certain way!

From all our suppliers we have not had an issue come back to us. as for leaks the gaskets should always sort this problem unless not properly fitted. when closed the doors will be fully waterproof. and when open any water that gets into the track will filter through weep holes located underneath the frame and out onto the cill. I guess the horror stories are from ill fitted doors or poor fabrication. like I said we spend time sourcing our manufacturer and supplier so problems are extremely rare. as for the even door panels I just like to make people aware before they buy. glad to hear you have a work around on this. the 2/2 door option woukd mean the locking mechanism is in the center. im not sure how the seals would hold as we havnt fit one to this spec.

It is personal choice - and it comes down to what a customer is looking to achieve from their project. The comment above about only getting properly used in summer is complete valid, as too is the overall size of the doors, where they are located on the house, what the view is like out of the property...indeed there is so much to consider we wrote and entire blog on the subject.

Hi Lisa, I'll be honest, I am surprised that anyone would recommend uPVC as a material for bifold doors over aluminium given your desire for doors that are not 'chunky' or 'clunky'. The kitchen is an extension, the "new dining area" would have been the old kitchen so no structural wall will be knocked down.

Below is the outside. The current window will be moved and will fit in opening of French doors and bricked up. And bifolds will go where small window is need to know how big to take it. And do we try and match up the frames and go white PVC or aluminium??

Below wall will be knocked down to create one big space through. It's a stud wall so will be leveled off. No beams

Hi Rosanna, why bifolds? I think it would be nicer as a sliding door as it’s not a huge area. Then you’d only have just one bar in the middle. Like this

Just a note about the size of room v size of dining table .... if you leave a walkway space of 1m each side of a table this won’t seat 8 ! So perhaps aim for a banquet seating with rectangle table rather than a round one.
