Front door: what plant would you put in this pot?

There are 2 matching pots, 44cm high x 37cm square, either side of a wooden front door.

Aspect is south facing.

I'd like something more unusual/ trending than a palm but what? Any colour suggestions?

Could I fill it with something inanimate (less work/money!)

Is there a formula for height of plant to height of pot when you buy?

Any suggestions and thank you

agree with elchan19. unless you wouldn't mind planting alpine plants. some, i think, are green year round, while others flower in spring/summer, so you'd have a bit of color. and planted stuff are maybe easier to maintain than potted. i mean, loads of people have potted plants, but if you're wanting to keep it low maintenance, maybe alpine perhaps? dunno?

The red robin's have gotten a little big and now block the windows. Does anything else flower wise come up at other times of year? It's only looking straggly due to the daff and tulip stalks, they'll need chopping off soon, and you would presume something else would come up to take it's place. It's difficult to have a perennial garden in a small space as you can't pack enough plants that come up at different times of year, however, it's not impossible. You could have a change and go for slabs and pots, easier to maintain, but don't forget that they'll need water every day in the summer. Do you like gardening? If you do, stay with perennials but plant with different level plants to give interest, and make sure you've got something there righ throught the growing season, plus some evergreen's for winter. If you don't like gardening, go for the pots. Acers, Hydrangeas and Hostas all do well in pots, but get big pots or barrells.

‘‘Tis strange as you say! Tbh I don’t like the position of the tv at all and not fussed on the leds as they aren’t in keeping with the style of the room, the piece of carpet in front of the fire does nothing for it either, a rug, reposition the tv and a fire surround of some sort would look better as a start.

It's a lovely house but I would just be aware of how much natural light it gets in terms of surrounding trees. There seems to be a lot of moss growth on the roof. I only mention this as our own house has lots of trees surrounding it and next time we move we would give more thought to how it impacts on light levels inside. The windows are lovely, but definitely the frame thickness is the key thing.

Very easy to look after and should do well for a good few years. There are not a lot of plants that are happy in a pot long term but there are a few.
If you want some flowers then my favourite is pot mums. They’re Chrysanthemums but the outdoor bedding variety (I recently bought some more from Asda.) Lots of colours, will be happy in a pot for years and flower when a lot of stuff is gone over. Tip for any potted plant is to scrape top layer of soil off in spring and replenish with fresh compost, it gives them an oomph 🙂, then water a lot during spring and summer months.

How about an evergreen shrub like Choisya ternata Sundance? It has bright yellow leaves and white fragrant flowers in May. I have one in a pot and it’s doing well. Or a smaller conifer? They have a lovely shape, but never put them in the garden as they can grow huge! This is my Choisya
