hello I need help on colour please!

can i have some advice please about colours for hallway an stairs, we liked the colours on cleeves house in that they had dark colour on woodwork and lighter walls but now we feel this may make our house look too dark. if we put white on panelling and doors wont they easily get dirty and scuffed? we have small children aged 8,6. i want an elegant look to accentuate the ceiling height . we have coving also to think about. please help!

Can you post pictures please? You can get scrubbable paint, such as Dulux Easy Care.

If you paint the panelling with eggshell, it is scrubbable.

The room is a great size. So we have a bit of background, how old is the house (i.e. is the existing decor suited to the age) and which direction does the window face (if it is South facing, you will get loads of natural light so could go darker with your colour scheme if you wanted. If it faces North, you might prefer lighter colours, or go darker/bolder, but make sure you have plenty of lighting accessories. And how much work are you prepared to do - could ceiling rose removal/replacement and removal of textured paint ceiling finish be on your agenda?

If your bathroom size is 3m x 3m you will be able to easily put both, a shower and a bath tub. As to the toilet going on the wall where window is - it all really depends where the stack pipe is. Naturally it will be much easier for the toilet to be as close to the stack, but you can always box the pipe. Running it fully under the floor is not possible due to the size and can only be partial not to weaken the joists too much. I have drafted a quick layout for you with two options A and B. The difference is that option A has a smaller vanity unit, single washbasin and a mirror, while option B has a larger vanity unit, two washbasin and no mirror. Both layouts give you a decent size (1m x 1m) walk-in shower (wetroom) and a good size bath tub (2m x 0.9m). You can really shuffle things around here and for example have a bath tub by the window (upper corner opposite of the door, where toilet is now on the plan) and toilet next to it (pipe can be easily concealed under the tub). Possibly two washbasins with vanity unit and a mirror to the left of the toilet and a shower opposite to it with potential of having a washing machine (where the vanity unit is on option A). Let me know what you think and we can draft some more layouts.

Hi Andrei, From a circulation view point I think you would naturally enter the room and form an arc to the right to the kitchen arriving at the kitchen island so the dining table would be best on the right I feel. A fire on the left where the vase is would look good visually as you walk in and less cluttered along that wall. If the island is movable I would suggest moving it to the right, closer to the sink and hob to allow a line of site from the sofa to the garden though the French doors. Perhaps a square coffee table tucked in close to the right angle of the sofa would be best for circulation and a bigger rug anchored by the legs of the sofa, perhaps curved on its outer edge to echo a round table?

Do you mean this Cleeves House? If so the colours are quite light. I think a darker colour would be better on the bottom in terms of light and it suits a period property. As said above eggshell is washable. Maybe try something like Farrow and Ball ammonite for the walls and Purbeck stone for wood but it would help to know which way the room faces

+the hallway is northwest

the front door is balmoral or stone grey ral 7030

the floor is light grey procelein with white marbling

i dont want the house to be grey throughout, i do like the monochrome look but also feel that the hallway has very little light so need to bring warmth in - there is also wall panelling on half the walls

im thinking to do dark internal doors to kind of match the front door but a warmer tone

question is to run that dark colour over the panelling as well or just keep to the internal doors and put a nicer warmer colour on the walls and panelling?

and yes i do mean the cleeves house you have posted but i think collours a bit too greysih and light we are thinking to darker internal doors to contrast with the floor or i have also seen a photo where the floor and skirting and doors are all light grey and a warm white on the walls and panelling? really confused!!! is there anyway of visualising the room to check how colours will look guys
