How to improve the look of this 1950's house? Ideas Please ....

Solid 1950's house. How would you make this more appealing?? New porch, tile hung or cladding. Just a few of my ideas? I've already replaced the gates and front door

Is that the new front door and gates ..? or can we have a new pic ?? There's lots that can be done here...

Definately new porch. take down nets, front hedge/wall, new windows, remove wires from front of house, new lantern next to front door.

I'll post some pics of porch ideas....

I agree - your stone wall is gorgeous! Yes if you do the porch it will change the way you see the rest of the house, Also rather than change windows, which is an expense you wish to avoid, I would suggest planting a honeysuckle that can be trained (not a huge trellis) over and around the most protruding window in the centre, perhaps flanked on either side by rambling roses to frame each of the left and right windows. This will add depth and remove the flatness, whilst adding beautiful colour, greenery and perfume - and wildlife! I would pay up for more mature, larger plants for greater coverage and then water them religiously with Miracle Gro. Will look and feel fantastic. What this house needs is a great front garden. The 'desert' of plain paving makes the house look worse than it is and adds to its flat appearance. A new porch would not solve this, but the addition of greenery, structure and form that a well planned small garden space would give, would transform the look of the house. Innovative solutions need not be high maintenance nor would you have to lose your off-street parking.

If you feeling brave, dark stains such as black look stunning and help the building to visually recede against the backdrop of vegetation. It's the tradition finish for agriculture buildings and has a very contemporary look. I'd contrast it with a pale grey deck or beige gravel or stone if you want something warmer. The building needs grounding in its setting, ie. connect it with a path and some planting to prevent it looking like it's been dropped from space! It's going to be a great facility to have in the garden.

Not sure if i need to start a new post but i have booled the decorator to come to paint all the fascias, soffits, guttering, downpipes and garage doors for now. But what colours? From pica attached you cam see we currently have an awful pale blue underneath. Would u do this again with the very dark charcoal colour which we are going to do our garage doors? Or would u keep it all white? Or would u paint the gutters and downpipes in the charcoal... or keep them white? Advise pls

Hi I have added a more recent photo to the original post with the new gates and the same door. I have also had new windows identical to the old ones. Unfortunately the wires will have to stay as that is the cat 5 for the internet. I hate the net curtains but my windows are so large (2.5 m) its like living in a goldfish bowl when people walk past, so they have to stay ...lol. Currently have an apple tree in the front garden. We are not allowed fencing or walls.

Any other ideas are very much appreciated and I love the porch you have suggested but i think it would be too big for my house!

Ok...what about updating the nets with venetians or shutters (if you have the budget). That would give an instant update. A hedge planted across the grass front would also give a bit more of a private feeling to the place.

The design of the porch could be easily downsized if you like it. or you could go for a smaller gable style porch.

My brother recently updated a 1950s house for a customer. It was a rather plain house, but the customer wanted an oak porch added. The windows were changed to a soft blue, with a darker blue front door. It was such a transformation. I wish I had a picture, but this picture gives you an idea of what was done.

I was thinking of something similar. A small tiled canopy with white wood supports. I would like Oak but budget won't allow it!! Thank you for your suggestion.
