Designing my whole house!

Guys, I've had the crappiest year. It should have been momentous as we moved back into our newly gutted out home after staying with family. It was a massive undertaking. There was still much to do but then of course the pandemic began. Unfortunately I lost my young cousin, my mum and then my gran. Months later I am in my home which should be stunning and comfy by now but I feel no inspiration. Therefore even though I am capable I've decided to hire a designer. Bearing in mind we have spent a fortune already I need to keep costs down. Please can you advise the right way to do this. How do I find someone, how do they charge etc etc. Thank You.

What a terrible time for you. You are probably still grieving over the loss of the people you love. Maybe this isn’t the time to tackle so much work? If you do want to tackle it via Houzz, then do, our advice is free. Some of the advice you will love and some you will think “No Way”! I suggest you post one room at a time on here, with photos and once you have had some advice, then post the next room. Or tackle that first room before posting the next one. Lots of people ask advice room by room. Dividing the work may make it less overwhelming. Of course you can employ a designer, but if budget is an issue then only you can decide on that. What an awful time you have had, it must have been so difficult.

Doing up a house can be overwhelming but can also be cathartic. I recently bought this book as I have been a fan of Michelle Ogundehin since her Elle Decoration days. It's an interiors book with a difference in that it has very few pictures, and focuses instead on the relationship between wellness and a comfortable functioning home. It dispels with quite a lot of interiors concepts that we have come to expect as standard, such as the 'need' for an island, the need for more space etc. She is a free thinker with good insight and years of experience. I found it very thought provoking.

Another really good book is 'Plain Simple Useful' by Terence Conran. Again, like the above a good book to focus the mind on the things that matter. Best of luck.

I agree with Jonathan, adding black would give it that sophistication. I'm sure what you already have in the house to do it though. Try cushions, lamp shades, picture frames, floor lamp etc. Try adding silver in mirror, ginger jar, lamp, plant pot etc . Hello Scott, Adding to Jonathan's suggestions, Look at the bones of the space first before worrying about what's going in it.. To an extent.. You really do need to consider what the end result is that you want.. It doesn't have to be in enormous detail but it really does need thinking about as a whole.. Once the bones have been decided then you can flesh out the scheme... So unless you're making structural alterations and or requirements that need engineers, architects etc.. You may need these but you may only need a builder- that all depends on the works.. then you could work with an interior designer once you're closer to getting to where you need to be in order to start decorating and filling the home with furnishings etc.. It might also be a good idea to work with a designer initially to consider what should stay or what you can address to retain the character or inject that which may have been lost.. Someone who can advise you on a look that compliments you and your family? and of course the house.. Whether that be kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms or gardens. What oven, what sofa, what plant.. For a full and coherent look at the house as a whole regardless of whether you do it all at once. : ))

Hi I think that Scandinavien Interior Design could be quite useful inspiration for you. It would definetely achieve clean lines and airy space. It's crazy how many white shades exists isn't it? I would suggest slightly warmer white - Pratt & Lambert Milk White 15-32. In terms open space tiles are great, ideal woul be wooden flooring in open space I always find it work beautifully. And as Sonia said, you can always post here. I would also recommend creating a mood board. Maybe one for the whole house and separate ones for different rooms. It'll help you getting an idea of the style you're going for and it'll also make it easier for you to keep focussed on the end result.

You can use a site like Pinterest, or tear out images from magazines and put them together with paint and fabric samples.

That really is crappy year. So sorry for your losses.

I agree with Sonia that although cathartic now might not be the right time. If you are not emotionally invested in the house because you are running on empty you may not love or even enjoy the decisions you make.

That being said planning and looking forward can be a great distraction.

What are you planning to do? If you want to decorate then a designer would be a great resource. If you are remodeling or extending then you might need a concept planner, designer or architect. Or if there are things you are just unhappy with perhaps you can post details of the problem for the clever Houzz contributors who may have a great solution.
