Double Story Extension - has any one else started a similar project?

Hi,

I've just started my double storey extension, converting a bungalow into a house. Is anyone doing the same now. Maybe we can help each other, share knowledge and offer advice etc;

Are you aware that building a 'L' shape extension will need planning permission first, this will set you back another 3-4 months. Plus Building Regs would need reapplying for. Also, from my experience conservatories only need building regs approval if they are over 30sqm; which means most conservatories are shoddy built and the foundations are unlikely to be suitable for the transformation into a proper extension. Also, the floor is unlikely to have been insulated - sorry but conservatories can be a hornets nest of problems. My advice is yes you should have a door off the hallway into the new room, cost of that should be minimal as you are only looking at using a couple of standard concrete lintels which are cheap as chips! Although I would have put the shower room at the front as the current layout means friends and visitors end up going through your kitchen to use the convenience. It has the advantage the new reception room as a rear garden outlook. Hope that helps

What an exciting project! One thing I've seen done is converting the loft - stealing a bit of space from the box bedroom for a return staircase then the remaining space is converted into an en suite for the master. In the loft you can then have a further two bedrooms and bathroom. This would likely be a lot cheaper than doing a two storey extension.

Hi, we're looking to start planning for a double storey extension on the end of our end of terrace house. There's so much information available it's a bit overwhelming and I wonder if anyone who has been through building a similar extension has some recommendations about the best websites, books, blogs etc. to read before we embark on this huge project? Wow that looks beautiful, I am jealous of the brick. We wanted a very similar colour brick but the council wouldn’t allow and I didn’t want the red brick so we went with blocks and hopefully crisp render. We started our build towards end of Jan. Double extension, the foundations laid and then had the structural engineer out and final final details drawn up. The ground floor blocks have been laid and the scaffold has gone up so don’t know how long that will take. Our builders seem on track and have said August finish but I think it will be September/October Tani how many bedrooms did you have built and how many rooms downstairs? Also from start date to now what has the time scale been? Xx
