Design Dilemma Kitchens Dining Rooms

Utilising area with least/best light

Design dilemma: We can have a huge kitchen can be in the best part of the 1930s semi, which is a rear extension with South facing windows and dining in the least lit. Or we can have a small kitchen in the least lit and have a diner lounge in the extension.

What would you do?

Put storage for the toys under the seating so it's easy to get to and declutters the space. Maybe even run the seating down one wall so you can sit on it, play on it, lounge on it, move the table up and down, but ideally I'd want to face the garden with the seating to make the most of the light. I'd paint the side wall white to bounce more light into the room. I agree that the table looks a bit small. With a bit of planning you could build it in such a way that the toy kitchen sits withing the seating. Thisis the Stolem IKEA unit as a Bench, but Besta works well too. STOLEM BENCH HACK

Hello Colourwise Design, Thought I would give you a visual of what I had meant. I have used Jonathan's drawing as I use sketchup personally for spatial drawings in 3D. However this means you get to see the same kind of view though with his design and scale. Also offers me the chance to show you how the materials can effect the overall appearance as I have deliberately chosen a material colour to blend with the flooring (or as close to so you can see what is solid) which can be done in a myriad of ways so things appear less solid and thus give a more open room configuration ... Have copied Jonathan's chairs which I have slid under a little more. So you have flow and a very simple configuration which does not hinder the exit to the garden which I think you will want to retain personally. So it could be that the first section houses sink, dishwasher. FF could be in left corner where room opens out? Hob could be at dining end. So cook and serve idea. This also allows for the additional room where the area widens. You still have flow between task oriented routes ie sink to ff and ff to hob etc. Making use of height with a single width double ff and perhaps considering a wall oven and some wall hung cupboards on that wall to the right of the image. The dresser might be able to situate to the right of the window on the left of the image. Down draft on hob or overhead extraction and ceiling hung pans or a section underneath hob for pans etc.. So this idea could either be solid with build in cupboards which I would propose have sliding doors or at dining end taper off into a table top.. Its a quick rework to show you what I had envisioned as I saw it. Re the door in to kitchen, perhaps consider a door that is sliding for example a pocket door. : ))

Re-cupboards and storage, it depends on your style. Have a look at Ikea Pax, you can probably put in a corner unit............I don't know what your dimensions are. but they do allsort. The doors with the cork finish are good for a lounge as they make them look less like a wardrobe. Also, you could have one door with a mirror on it and cut down on wall space for a mirror elsewhere. Same with the desk area. If you have an office in a cupboard you get extra storage, you can also close the doors to make it look really tidy.

Hello, I think the comments above are all good points to consider. I find bar stools are breakfast bars are one of those things that seem like a good idea but will be under used. I have a preschooler and a toddler and I would suggest that a good family dining space in the kitchen will be a lot more used than an area with high stools. A separate dining room does seem like a nice idea but I think it is probably a luxury that doesn't make sense with the space you have. Try to really imagine how you use the space and keep a track of where you spend time now. It would probably be worth consulting an interior designer or kitchen designer to get some ideas. It doesn't always cost as much as you might think and can save you making decisions you might regret. Good luck with the project, it looks really exciting.
