What can I do with cupboard

We will be moving to my husband's family home next year, a lot of the furniture is mahogany and quite old so I'm not allowed to paint it, the large cupboard at the end of the room is built in so cant be moved. I'm thinking about having a carpenter in to build shutter doors around it in it light colour as it currently makes the room so dark also I dont know what to do with the beams, they are currently black which darkens the room a lot

as you can see through to the dining room I'd probably pick up the turquoise myself. In terms of colours that go with turquoise and lime you could try grey, yellow or navy. If you want something bolder fushcia can also work (as seen on the book on your table!). The walls look as if they're pale grey so maybe pick up a little more? I thought all the art was like that deliberately, I quite like art leant on walls! Personally I prefer picture frames matching but I do like your black framed art that's hung on the wall with the White framed one on the sideboard. Your art looks modern so personally would avoid wood. if you're in agreement re furniture layout I'd rearrange that slightly and then hang your art so it can be centred behind the sofa for example

Sand the table back to original wood, stain or varnish and finish with a Bri Wax. Hope this helps let me know.

Is it just the light making the top cabinet cream and the bottom one white? In any case I personally would leave the bottom one as it is as there's no contrast with the washer dryer Which you probably don't want to stand out? The side of the top cabinet isn't as attractive with the screws visible though so personally I'd remove It. You could replace with 2 shelves and then maybe a rattan laundry basket on top of the dryer to balance things out or it looks as if you could do one long shelf over both the sink and dryer and then a shorter one just over the sink. I'd then just add hammam towels and a nice soap etc on the sink its hard to tell what the existing surface is though if you wanted to paint but zinsser goes over pretty much anything. I can't recall if it's the red or blue one you need and you just finish with paint of your choice. It has the consistency of milk though so is tricky to use at first (cover the floor!!) and not particularly cheap.

The bricks are dark and dinghy. Paint them white then perhaps a pale grey for the units would appeal to buyers. Don’t paint the units dark - in a recent survey I read it was one of the top things that put buyers off!

Such a lovely room, but the cupboards and beams are so dark and light sapping, although I’m saying what you already know! You could paint the beams in a lighter shade like a taupe or even white along with the ceiling. I know you don’t want to paint the two units, but they would look lovely in white, cream, a soft green or taupe. Furniture has been painted for hundreds of years and certainly isn’t a new thing. The beams can be sand-blasted to their natural wood colour and I saw George Clarke do that on his programme last week, but it’s dusty work! That room has so much potential. Here’s a few ideas

The beams can be blasted with baking soda (more gentle than sand) and will come up much paler.

Can you put the large old dark furniture into storage? Personally I love that style furniture but it has to be in the right setting.

Maybe start with the beams and see how that changes the room. it may be that the lighter beams will make the cupboard a better feature and not so oppressive.

I personally would try and strip/sand the paint off the beams and seal them in Osmo Oil (numerous colour options available) The richness of the original wood beams will bring some warmth to the room.

Whilst the large cabinet is beautiful it overwhelms the room. I know you said it’s built-it but maybe it’s best to carefully remove it and reconstruct it somewhere else more suitable in the house as it’s currently blocking the light from the window, casting the dining area in shadow and dominating the space.

What a fantastic project!!
I agree with the others regarding having the beams blasted. Regarding the large cabinet - I understand that you can’t paint it, however what about having it professionally lightened? You can do this yourself (but looks like it would be messy and also very tricky to get a good finish), or if you google local French polishing companies, many of them offer a bleaching service. I have no personal experience of this, and I can’t imagine it’s cheap - however I think it would give you a “natural” result that could look stunning.
