Flooring colour choice

I cannot make a decision on what colour/design of flooring to choose please help. The new flooring will run from the hall into the open plan kitchen/living room. The new kitchen has a laminate worktop called Oak Lodge and the cabinets are Cashmere. The rooms have good natural ligthing. I think LVT would be good and have numerous samples of Amtico and Karndean but have become overwhelmed and nothing seems to be right. Walls are all very natural soft greys and creams so very safe. I always thought I would go for a wood style floor but not sure if it would be too much with the worktops. I have been living with plywood floors for nearly two years and would like to finally get this sorted. Please help!!!!

Hello Tom, I think it could be a very relaxing and inviting room - A mid century style sofa with legs would be ideal (Think mad men and stylish!) ... Something less solid and thus the feel is more open within the flooring spatially.. A 3 seater and perhaps two chairs.. Something that would work well with your chosen scheme (grey or other)... Perhaps have the sofa facing that little window wall with some chairs opposite.. So there's less of a "tunnel" You could then have a different shaped coffee table.. I'd suggest the less solid idea with any cabinetry like a console or sideboard.. Small cabinets.. Anything with legs! Even a wardrobe is a nice element in a living room.. Storage for crockery etc or the flat screen for example or projector.. Given the height, you could afford to have a larger ceiling light fitting here and why not have a look at Ebay. There are some really fantastic finds for vintage and interesting.. I'd bring the glass table out of that window recess a bit further... So it could be a multi- functioning table... Working, eating, socialising.. You may find then you don't need the other wooden table.. Chairs are other good finds on ebay or perhaps a visit to an antiques fair or two.. Mirrors could be interesting here too with the slope of the ceiling curve.. Plain and square.. if at all and hung on an angle reflects light downward.. especially good with a dark scheme... Now on to some colour... You might want to take inspiration from the rug too.. but I rather like the earthy grey or that which has brown in it.. You could introduce rust colours to compliment and then the light whiter colours for the ceiling half could be off whites and with slight yellows.. Little Greene has lovely colours.. Very chalky and dense.. For whites.. Whitening, White lead, Ceviche is nice, stone colours. Grey moss and Furrow for earthy greys. For rich grey Scree is lovely. Bring the wood work into the scheme too.. It makes for a fabulous finish.. Consider too on that rear wall (behind second sofa) a very large mirror to lean up against the wall.. Something like 8 x 6ft if you can get something sizey into the space.. Or a series of long narrow mirrors leant up against could do. If you decided to go with a dark colour this could work as it offsets the colour, bounces the light back into the room and offers a visually interesting element and spatially it makes the room twice the size whatever the size... A few ideas off the top of my head.. : ))

Hi, of course we are going to be a little bias, but we will try to remain 'neutral' as at the end of the day it is you who needs to feel confident when making your purchase - new flooring is a big commitment and you have to feel confident in your supplier and the product. There are a few things you should consider though.... We think that the biggest thing to remember when buying any natural plant fibre flooring - whether from us or Crucial Trading - is the characteristics of it. Sisal is normally the best choice for a living room, jute as a fibre is not as hardwearing and really best used in lighter traffic areas such as bedrooms. Coir is also hardy enough for heavier traffic areas but a bit rougher and more rustic underfoot; Sisal is more refined and comes in the most options for weave, texture and colour. However, all natural fibres have to be cared for slightly differently to 'conventional' carpet. You have to be careful with any spillages, being plant fibre they don't like liquids and even water could potentially leave a mark. Most natural flooring suppliers will offer a treatment service (ours is called INTEC) which can be applied to the flooring at their warehouse. These treatments help to not only prolong the life of the flooring but also try to hold any spillages on the surface to allow you extra time to attend to. Of course it all depends on the type of spillage and how long it is left before treated as to whether a mark is left. There are also care kits which are made specifically for natural plant fibre flooring for spots and spills (which we also sell) which are good to have to hand and use as soon as possible after an accident. The quicker you attend a spill the more chance you have of it not leaving a mark. There are also professional 'dry' carpet and flooring cleaners across the country who can offer periodic maintenance cleaning as you would with a conventional carpet. You also need to consider that a natural fibre flooring requires a slightly different installation method to a normal carpet. We would always recommend they are installed by a professional and experienced natural flooring fitter and that they are installed on the 'double stick' method. This means that an underlay is glued to your sub-floor and then the flooring is glued on top of the underlay along with short pinned gripper as extra security around the perimeter of your room. It should also be acclimatised in the room before installation for at least 48 hours to 'settle' - again being natural then when first moved to a new area and atmosphere the fibres may contract and shrink slightly. However a good fitter will allow for this and fit securely so that any further shrinkage is avoided. It may seem like we are putting you off, however quite the opposite. We have found that people who are fully aware of all of the characteristics of natural fibre flooring in advance, actually find it less daunting and fall completely in love with it. They often end up replacing natural fibre flooring with more natural fibre flooring; but transparency from suppliers and preparation is the key! Unless you are going for hardwood decking, I wouldn’t have it. It is slippery when wet and softwood decking starts to rot after a few years. Mine is 8 years old and starting to rot in one corner. I was considering composite decking until I found several bad reviews of it, mainly in the US. It tends to show wear and flaking within 10 years and it warps. In fact Trex is being sued by many customers in the US as the product is not maintenance free and does not last 25 years. Have a read on www.thecraftsmanblog.com. However, outdoor grade porcelain seems a better bet? It comes in wood effect or tile and is non slip. It has a very modern feel if that is the look you’re after. Worth a look?
