Narrow kitchen inspiration

Hey,

Following on from a previous post, I’d like to get some inspiration for my (hopefully near-) future narrow kitchen renovation. I’ve googled and Houzz’d endless amounts but often pictures don’t give you dimensions, so it can be hard to gauge if it’s more than you have etc.

My space after knocking through will be 8.5m x 3.2m so quite a long narrow space. If anyone has similar dimensions please show me your kitchens for inspiration!!

I’ll eventually get a designer in when ready but want some layout ideas.

Hi Nikki,

Don't have any photos, unfortunately, but a u-shape kitchen would probably work well (depending on where your doorways are). The room is very long, I'm assuming you want to have a dining space in the same area?

Units are 60cm deep, so that would leave you two meters between them which is a good amount of space if you wrapped the units on one side, and then had a dining space on the opposite side.

Hey Nic,

The plan is to have Sliding or Bi-Fold doors at the end of the kitchen exiting out onto the garden, but if this isn’t possible (budget as would mean having two walls taken out, two RSJ’s etc etc) then I think a U- shape would work really well.

Yes I’d be knocking through to make the dining room/kitchen one room so a dining table would need to be there also.

We were confronted with similar limitations on a project last year. We achieved a layout which I believe optimises the space available. The distance between the kitchen units was 85-90cm. Please see project here. I believe the key area to address with a small kitchen are: storage - favour drawers opposed to doors and explore which internal storage solutions suit your needs lighting - ensure all areas of the kitchen are well-lit worksurface - provide as large an area as possible; induction hobs and undercount sinks with integrated drainer grooves help handleless door/drawer fronts - if a modern kitchen, I'd suggest going for handleless to avoid catching plinth - repeat the same flooring material as plinth to give the illusion that the base units are floating gaps - avoid; build in units wherever possible - cleaning within the tight space will otherwise be cumbersome

At least it’s all inches - we sometimes get a mix of inches and centimetres ( and evening millimetres too ) on some survey sheets we get back when we are designing with clients - we don’t mind as we can soon work it all out and check it adds up ! What are the sizes of the rooms and do you know which walls are loadbearing? Could the utility wall be extended, so the utility can become loo and half of the kitchen a new utility and side entrance? Then the former breakfast room can be playroom. Kitchen in the old dining room, which already is semi-open to lounge and then dining in the conservatory part.

Hello Nikki! Pinterest is a really good place to get some inspiration. You could probably have d 'double gallery wall'. With a smaller storage wall as per the photo.

the thinner storage could be 300mm deep, so this would definitely work in terms of space..

Ooo, of all the images i’ve trawled through I’ve never seen a shallow storage wall like that, I really like it. I do look on Pinterest but sometimes you can’t gauge what size their rooms are so it’s hard to know if it will work with my space.

I totally understand that. I just finalised a project for a client that had a very narrow and long kitchen, we used a narrow storage wall for this and it worked beautifully. We had half of the unit with 'closed storage' as well. If you are interested to get more advice or help feel free to contact us!
