Hi everyone

Looking for recommendations for companies who install garden offices in south London / Surrey area. Really keen to get one that can be used all year around - so not crazy hot in summer or freezing in winter.

Also welcome any tips from anyone who has done this! 🙏

Hello edwardallen,

As you can see from my company profile we are currently building a cabin we designed for a client earlier this year. If you want to use the cabin all year round then I would suggest fitting Web Dynamics TLX Gold multi-foil insulation over the rafters (assuming the roof is pitched) and PIR insulation such as Celotex or Kingspan in between the rafters, in the walls and under the floor.

Hi Redarmy, To get what you really want, tailored to your requirements, you need to go bespoke. On any production run built product, you will have to compromise. What defines reasonable price? I think you should consider value for money and get it built to your specification. This one was drawn by an architect to get planning permission, and then virtually every internal aspect and a number of external ones too, were changed to the customer's wishes! Including a mezzanine at one end for external accommodation, a pontoon extending out into the pond, oh and we used the soil from the pond excavation to create a mini football pitch in an adjoining paddock. Garden office - loo or no loo?

Keep the loo. We built a new garden room over lockdown and didn't add a loo as it would have too expensive with new sewage etc. But with husband now working out there it would have been great to save him having to come into house. It could also be teen hangout space, home gym or occasional guest room - all would use a loo. But even just for kids to go to loo quickly when playing outside I think it's worth it since it's already there.

Mostly on new builds no workable topsoil is imported so the landscapers have try to level what they have. If it's sticky clay then all they can do is roughly level and squash it flat. That will almost always lead to 'capping' although turf can cause capping too when it is firmed down. If these are the 'only' issues then getting a hollow time aerator and getting a bunch of cores cut out, then filling them with sandy soil might change things a great deal. You may be able to test whether this is going to work well by just using a fork to do a smallish area, sticking it in few inches and wiggling it around. It would need to be an area which is not at a low point as that will refill with water from the rest of the lawn anyway. Sites vary a great deal and what is going on adjacent will have an effect too.

Hi Niamh, What a delightful little space! In my opinion, the colour you're leaning towards won't make it feel small, as long as your furniture isn't too big for the space and accessories are pared back it'll make it feel like a cosy nest. Another colour to consider might be a sage green. I'm a big fan of connecting the outside to the inside, especially in garden rooms and spaces that open out onto gardens. Breakfast Room Green by Farrow & Ball is a great colour (see attached pic) and it also makes a great backdrop to houseplants, which will thrive in your South-facing space. Hannah
