looking at ideas for kitchen island/breakfast bar

we have an L shape lounge/diner/kitchen - we walk through our lounge which leads onto the dining room then onto the kitchen, French doors to the garden. Plan is to have bench seating with dining table extra chairs dining area and then in the kitchen the island/breakfast bar. the kitchen is planned with the fridge to the left,larder cupboard floor and wall units boiler, to the rear double oven with small cupboard each side, to the right corner cupboard leading onto the sink with drainer, washing machine and tumble dryer. looking for ideas how to put together the island at minimal cost,,, whether it would be buying work top, cupboards and shelving. Any ideas would be good.

I don’t think the hatch adds anything to the rooms so I would remove the wall but not in its entirety. It’s a narrow kitchen but I wonder if a U shaped kitchen might work. This would necessitate blocking the kitchen door that leads into the hall. Access to the kitchen would then only be from the lounge roughly located where the hatch is now. Leave the base units that house the sink and hob where they are and run slimline base units along the kitchen/hall wall. I have heard of people using wall cupboards for this purpose. You could perhaps have open shelves above. Going back to the wall with the hatch. Take it down to base unit height on either side. Or slightly above to screen the work surfaces from the lounge/dining room and take it down to ground level where the hatch currently is to allow access. You would of course need to relocate the radiator but that shouldn’t be too much of a job.

We were going to have exactly the set up as shown in your photo, but with the breakfast bar as a feature so it was a complimentary but contradtong material to the rest of the kitchen and was mounted on top of the work surface with a small over lap I.e. 400mm deep I think from memory - 100mm overlap with 300mm overhang for breakfast bar. I'll try and post a photo of the design

Thank you Jonathan for linking it back. You have a great memory. My sister in law put the plans on here to help out. And we loved your design and took it forward, but the estimate for the work was too high. We are therefore not knocking through anymore and instead are looking at relocating the kitchen to the current dining room as we feel the room might flow better there and would be next to the utility.

If you just want a prep surface and overhang for stools with some open storage then a wooden topped kitchen or dining table, raised up with something like newel posts or similar to work bench height with a shelf inserted between is very effective. If you require a deeper overhang (I believe overhangs larger than 15cm might need bracketing and the tabletop secured well to prevent tipping) then you could place an additional work top over it. You could paint the feet, legs and shelf to match your perimeter units or as an accent colour. Maybe a little on the rustic side but I have seen it with a back gloss kitchen with pine top and cream legs and shelf and it looks good, warming up the black.
