Just exposed this fireplace

The dimensions are the fireplace is 80cm wide and 130cm high. The aperture is 34cm wide and that rear slope starts at 40cm off the ground. Any ideas on what insert I have to get?

I agree with Rennew Traditional Building Materials - it's not a question of what's 'trending' or 'passé', but of really paying attention to the existing building and marrying that with the sensibility of the future inhabitant. Some spaces suit the industrial treatment, some don't, and no-one should be forced to be fashionable. I can't help thinking of the old Bauhaus principle of 'truth to materials' though. If you find yourself faking an 'authentically exposed' surface, then something isn't quite clicking in your analysis of what's in front of your nose. Not that I wasn't once taken in by an entirely ersatz 'industrial' café in Paris once, which was not, as I'd supposed, a converted butchers! The convincingly-aged metro tiles were to die for...

Bricks are a fired clay product and will give you 4 hours fire resistance so do not worry about fire. If the wall is internal then no problem re heat insulation, however if the wall is an external wall then the insulation to a new wall should meet the current heat insulation standards for a dwelling.How you meet the requirements will depend on the construction. If a new structure it should have been checked by the Building Inspector. If an existing wall then check out the construction to assess where and how it can be insulated - cavity fill would be most discrete if you wish to avoid heat loss. Traditionally almost any paint can be used but will need regular freshening . if you like the bricks then simply seal them with a proprietary brick sealant and no more painting of that wall.

It looks to me that it's actually an 'exposed ceiling'. The plasterboard and insulation have been removed and the construction boards ( joists ) sanded and varnished . The last pic shows some kind of roofing material to the left. Hopefully that is concealing some insulation as it's the roof. I'd be a little concerned that it's actually a fire hazard, and possibly against today's building regs. I don't want to be alarmist, so just saying. Is the house in the U.K? I'd be looking to put back the plaster board and insulation as the sound travel must be quite horrendous and I'd check out the requirements for a ceiling and the fire issue. Maybe the boards have been treated with a fire retardant finish? It looks like the ceilings would have been quite low, which is why maybe the owner or previous one took down the ceilings in the first place. In short, i'd check out the requirements for the ceiling, consider the sound travel, the lack of insulation and heat loss.

hi Fiona, I think you may be heading towards a lot of work with the suggested exposure if there roof timbers to your bungalow. there are a number of potential adress to consider before attempting this work. I will attempt to outline some of these to help you to weigh up the work involved as follows: 1)Are the timbers worth exposing, wil they look good. 2)How will you extend the dividing walls between rooms which will stop at the current ceiling and not extend into the loft. What will you do to hide electrical wiring that will no doubt be run without any consideration between joists and down partitions to switch runs. 4)Depending on the configuration of the house you may have pipes running in the ceiling, together with water storage tanks, if you have a gravity fed cold water system. you will need to consider how you will create proper fire separation between rooms that you intend exposing timbers. how will you insulate the room. with the current regulations requiring increasing levels of insulation there will be more insulation required that you home currently had, so you will probably have to insulate under the rafters, which may present challenges. The above is by no means an exhaustive list but should give you a few things to check in making the decision. Personally I would leave well alone, but if you still want to do this get a surveyor to produce a specification if the works and get some competitive quotes in from a few builders.
