To paint just Chimney Breast or alcoves as well

Hello, I have just bought a house (awaiting the keys) and really love the Inchyra Blue colour, I am unsure if to just paint the Chimney breast in this colour or the alcoves as well. I have ordered a large dark Grey sofa, Ochre yellow cushions, Round Gold Mirror and a new light fitting. The Alcoves are quite wide and eventually I would like shelves on the right side etc. The paint on the full wall works well on high ceiling properties but unsure if it would have the same affect in a cottage? The cottage I have bought is the one with the floral paper currently. I do not want to spend too much time doing up the property as I need to move in quickly.

Hi,

I wuld most likely paint the alcoves as weel if you are considering putting shelves up at a later date. The colour will give a great backdrop the shelves and your display items.

Great colour choice.

Lovely cottage. Cottages tend to have low light levels so I personally would not go for Inchyra Blue, gorgeous as it is. Go for a more gentle colour like Cromarty, Borrowed Light or Pale Powder. They will sit well with the grey sofa, but keeps the room bright and clean.

Going back to original options with the sofas opposite each other, can you fit a tv unit under the stairs as that could look quite good? With regard to the L shaped arrangement with the tv on the unit, you could drill a circle in the back of the unit and store the play station and sky in there. Another option which I think could work is to swap the dining and living round as the dining end looks bigger. Have one sofa on the kitchen wall with the other opposite ( place the sofas about a foot from both walls) and hang the tv above the radiator. You could make a feature of the room with a built in tv, Sky and radiator cover, as per example attached from Andre hodges. That should still give you at least 4ft for a clear corridor to the kitchen ( on the basis the 7ft measurement you gave was from the side of the kitchen door!) I wouldn't paper the recesses now I've seen the whole room. Maybe considering papering or painting the kitchen wall to Bring the wall in so as to make it feel wider and give more interest to the lounge.

Hello Shelly, I rather think the peaty, mushroom, blackish browns of the colour chart could look really nice.. Or deeper blacker blues.. With the alcove or chimney dilemma.. Contrary to what F&B have said.... I'd personally paint the chimney breast the darker colour.. It will not only highlight the fire and the mirror but draw the eye to it... The recesses then stay the lighter colour thus giving the room an idea of space. Eyes are drawn to darker bolder colours.. Darker recesses bring it all forward to the eye and then create the idea of less space if the majority is staying a lighter colour.. If you are working to a dark scheme then I would suggest all dark or the reverse of what I have said, so light chimney breast in a dark room.. It's to do with the majority ratio : ))

Have a look at what you intend to put up in terms of artwork/mirrors. I would paint the alcoves dark if you are going to hang light coloured pictures on them, and then maybe a wooden mirror would work on the lighter chimney breast.

I'm afraid I am always wary of fixing the tv above a fireplace & heating source. My concerns are a/ the height it puts the tv at - is really a comfortable viewing angle?? I see currently you have the tv lower on the chest/drawers. mock up the tv on some card an hang it where you were thinking of mounting the tv and look at it for a while to see if it really is the best location. There are some mounting systems that might allow you to mount the tv flat in the alcove and bring it forward when in use. b/ heat rising from the heater and damaging/overheating the tv. We often don't realise how much heat makes it's way directly above. If you decide to position the tv in the alcove, then a darker color in the alcove would reduce reflection.
