Is a very small ensuite bathroom possible or even worth it?

I am buying a house and there is an area to one side of the main bedroom that is currently being used as a very large cupboard with high ceilings. I am wondering if it could be made into an ensuite. It is 100x185cm. I think it might be possible to fit everything into it (see my "plan" in the pic) but as it's lockdown I am not able to go to any showrooms to see things in person. So I am wondering if a) this layout would work and b) to anyone who is more familiar with bathroom design- is this even worth it or will it be incredibly cramped? Thanks!

Hi Peri

Its not the biggest of spaces but an ensuite could be squeezed into this space. You will also need to consider the cost of plumbing and waste.

If you would like a scaled concept putting together for the space to understand what you will be able to fit into the space, plus a fly through video to see how you will feel in the space I can put this together for you for £150. I can complete this remotely.

Fitting it in is one thing, but you'll need to talk to a plumber about how the soil pipe is gonna get to the drain. If it's near/above existing bathrooms/kitchens/utility that will be easier.

I think size-wise you'd struggle - unless you use second bedroom for storage/dressing room. Your main bedroom is similar size to mine and I opted for larger family bathroom rather than 2 tiny rooms for sake of ensuite. Another consideration will be where plumbing/drainage is currently running, as this will cause major upheaval to re-route. Do you have current floor plan?

Hi I think you have chosen the best and really only layout for this space. My suggestions are to look at ways to make this space the most comfortable you can, think about a minimal shallow shower tray so there isn't a big step, with the shower screen door opening into the shower and a small wall hung vanity so you have more floor space. Think about the WC position, when you sit on the WC your knees don't want to bang on the sink so I think you have to keep it fairly central on the back wall. You can get space saving short projection WC's like the Villeroy and Boch O.novo. It looks like you have a window on that wall so making sure the WC fits under that and so on will make the space look fabulous and perfectly formed!

Personally I would put large tiles on the floor as well as in the shower, as herringbone will mean a lot of grout lines on the floor to get grubby. Then you could use the herringbone tiles on the wall behind the sink and make a feature of that wall? And/or on the wall above the bath (though it would be a hell of a job for the tilers with that slope, but can be done)? The bath panel could be either the large tiles or the herringbone. What’s the plan for the black long tiles - I like the idea of using those somewhere, maybe on the false wall behind the loo? Black herringbone as a nod to the white herringbone but to give a contrasting colour. Are the marble tiles real marble, or porcelain marble style? They are lovely by the way. If they are real marble I would be a little wary of using them in the shower as they are porous and may stain or spall, also mineral deposits can leach out causing rust stains especially with all those lovely veins. Calacatta is a particularly porous marble, more so than Carrara for example. If they are real then I would limit them to wall use (the sink wall and possibly the wall behind the bath as I say above) and perhaps use the black herringbone in the shower instead?

Generally a 4 bed house wants two bathrooms but the room sounds too small to add even a tiny en suite. Is that the biggest room? Could one of the other rooms have the en suite added, or be reduced in size to accommodate the en suite to the master?

Size-wize, it might be too small. 1m deep is certainly possible but would be cramped. 1.8m might not be wide enough, but a plumber could guide you on that. Can you steal any more space? Ideally another 70 or 80cm would be great.

In theory it's possible. We've done it in an almost identical bathroom although, as has already been pointed out, it does depend on the plumbing.

In small spaces like this, it's a good idea to conceal pipework as much as possible. If you panel out on the long wall by around 150mm, you can create an L shaped configuration. This creates an alcove into which you can fit some mirrored cabinets with over lighting or just a mirror with light over, and a useful shelf below. It will also allow for a shaver point, wall mounted taps and basin, a wall hung WC and, in theory would accommodate your soil pipe.

For the purpose of the layout I've highlighted the tiled areas in blue and included a wall hung basin but you could go for a little washstand like the one in the picture attached.
