Ovens in kitchen island good or bad idea?

I was thinking about having two ovens in a kitchen and wondered if this was a good idea or not?
There will be an induction hob on the island and then the two ovens under it.
The alternative is placing them in a tall unit.

Of they are in an island they'd be low down so more difficult to access, side by side also meaning taking up double width - not ideal.

I think islands look much smarter with just lovely deep drawers with nice handles, that would be spoiled with ovens.

I would stack them in a tall unit.

It depends how mobile you are. I quite like the idea of them hidden from view other than from the cook but then you do have a question over the extractor. I think you’d also need 1200mm gap if you’re crouching down to retrieve things and you might want to consider it from a safety perspective if you have kids or pets. what Size is the island?

Hi there, White marble looks gorgeous as a worktop but is quite porous and prone to staining. All natural stone worktops will need to be sealed, but marble does require more maintenance and care than other types of worktop. Alternatives you could look at are combining a white composite worktop with a white marble splashback that runs up to the underside of your wall-mounted cupboards. I've attached a couple of images to illustrate what this could be like. Granites can be really striking, but there doesn't tend to be the same colour range of white-grey as you find with marbles. You might also consider using a white quartzite, which is a natural material. Although quartzites tend to be a little softer than granites, I've attached an image of a couple which have a hardness comparable to some granites - best if you were to go with a 30mm thick worktop if using them though. The one with the larger crystals is called Iceberg White, and one with the smaller crystals that run in bands is called White Nestos. Hope that is of some help! Best of luck with your project.

I agree completely with OnePlan. There are lots of ways this house could be altered to suit you and your family and I presented just one option. A design professional would help you think about what you need out of the house and what parts bother you most and need addressing. They would also consider sunlight, regulations improving the flow, sight lines, aesthetics and correct sizes. Getting the design right is so important and most people don’t. They either make changes organically (make a small change then see what they want to do next) which never works, or make plans based on their budget concerns but don’t really know what things cost (By this I mean that they plan lots of little changes thinking that they are managing the budget or preferring to pay for lots of little jobs rather than one big one). In my opinion the best route is to get a great home is to get together a plan and to stick to it even if you can’t do everything all at once.

I have an Ikea kitchen and most non Ikea appliances fit their carcasses no problem, apart from the dishwasher. We used John Lewis ovens, great, an Ikea freezer as it was cheap and easy to replace if it goes wrong, but the massive pain was the dishwasher. We bought their basic one and within a couple of months the heating element went. It took a lot of time to arrange an engineer to come out, he did and fixed it. Then the door was a problem, then the element went again. I thought, this time I will replace it with a John Lewis one, but they are NOT compatible. You can't put a non Ikea dishwasher in one of their low carcasses. I reluctantly had to buy another Ikea one, but this time got the one with a 5 year guarantee. The engineer said all the parts are the same, so it could go wrong again. Which magazine doesn't rate Ikea appliances very well so worth a look on there. All said and done, it's a small price to pay for a well designed kitchen that is really good value.

I would avoid an island, given the space available, but in the past, where we had insufficient room for a fixed island we had a butcher’s block as an alternative and this worked really well. In fact, I loved the butcher’s block so much it moved with us to our current house. It is a bit lower than standard worktop height so is great for all sorts of food prep.

Thanks, the designer wanted to recreate a range cooker style within the island and I did wonder if this would be the best option. I am happy with the hob being on the island, as its 2400mm in length so plenty of space.

initially I wanted a range cooker but moved away from that idea.

@minnie101 That photo is similar to what we have planned. I am mobile right now, and the ovens are the Neff ones where the doors slide into the oven when open.

I too like the idea of them being hidden away and cooking where I can look over and chat to the family.

I have Neff hide & slide ovens and I wouldn’t want to use them low down. The reason is that the door slides itself away automatically when you open it. So if you take out a tray to baste/turn stuff on the hob, the oven door will disappear and your legs will be in front of the open hot oven. You’ll find yourself having to pull the door out and close it the whole time which defeats the point of hide & slide and also means you‘d actually be better off with non hide & slide where you can just flip the door up easily.

Personally I would go for a raised oven every time but if you do go for low down consider carefully whether you want the hide &slide...

Low ovens are more tempting and easier to access for little children.
