The fireplaces in the bedrooms are decorative. Living room is a real open fire and the study (with the wooden fireplace surround) has been converted to gas. We were lucky to acquire three of the fireplaces from the house directly across the road. They cost £500 which I thought was a bargain until I realised they would cost me £2,500 to restore them! The wooden surround was in the house when we bought it and we had to buy the cast iron insert. The surround is actually mahogany, I'm not actually that keen on it but couldn't bring myself to rip it out! I would get to know the neighbours and see what original features they have in their houses. Be careful with architectural salvage, for example salvaged doors if you need them have often been dipped in acid and the glue joints tend to fail after a while. We employed a conservation architect to restore the house and I felt his design was one which would stand the test of time. We had folding doors in our last house. These timber doors are bespoke made and look/feel quality. Just a bit more sophisticated.

Judith, this is, as I am sure you can imagine a very complex situation. I have also received the following from my photo syndication agency - Dear All, Following a complete U-Turn by the government on the repeal of Section 52 with a 5 year transition. There is a consultation open at present with a closing date of 23rd December 2015. This consultation could result in the change coming into effect on 28th April 2016 - giving all photographers and publications very little time to prepare. This will have a disastrous effect on all interior photographers, libraries and publications Each and every designer/estate of a 3D creative work (for Life+70 Years) would be able to claim copyright infringement for the inclusion of their artistic works/items within 2D images. Furniture, Pottery, Ceramics, Glass, Jewellery, Clothing, accessories, the list of effected items is endless. It is likely there will be a flurry of legal test cases and the government are providing very little guidance (relying on test cases to develop new boundaries). The publication of images that show 3D objects that haven't been cleared or licensed would be a criminal offence Please Act Now Please provide evidence of how the repeal of Section 52 will effect you as an individual and provide your reply to the consultation (link to consultation paper below): https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/transitional-arrangements-for-the-repeal-of-section-52-cdpa There are clear questions listed in the consultation paper and your reply can be sent by email to: section52CDPA@ipo.gov.uk ????? are doing everything we can by submitting an evidence based reply to the consultation and will be supporting other submissions. In our reply to the consultation we are: Asking for a 5 year transition once again for 2D representations of 3D works (as the main concern is replica furniture/accessories) Asking for an exclusion for editorial use of 2D images showing 3D objects Demonstrating the cost implications of identifying objects within the images and attempting to obtain clearance Asking for an exception, allowing for home-owners to have the right to show their own homes in photographic works without risk of committing a criminal offence. Our understanding is that in order for the replies to have impact it's important to document your position within the industry - length of time within it, type of clients, important designers you have worked with etc... We have been informed that collecting societies are already gearing up towards test cases to claim compensation for designers at the expense of photographers and their representatives as soon as the law is passed. As most contracts with publishers pass all the responsibilities back to the photographer, it is ultimately the photographers who are left in the firing line. Hi Sara. If you want doors at the end I'd go for a galley with built in seating similar to this. Opposite way round for yours though with tall units (with appliances) and banquette on right. I'd just have base units on the left and stop them where the tall units opposite end if you want to keep the side door. I would look at moving the boiler though and you may have to change the dining room window as it looks low although there may be other ways to deal with this. I think french doors would be nice, perhaps painted in a dark shade?

Exciting times! So far your colours sound lovely. Very calming and natural. I'd add a little highlight colour to just to enliven the scheme. Something like a slate grey will help marry the dark sofa into the lighter scheme and maybe a tiny touch of an blue or mustard. Just a tiny bit will make a statement. Think about the lighting. This part is important you'll need to add some pools of light to make a bit of interest. Most new homes don't look that homely add first and a lamp of two makes home a little more homely feeling. If your new home has any architectural features try to showcase this with a bit of light. If it's more of a featureless room add table lamps to add some mood lighting. I'd strongly recommend signing up to our newsletter if you are buying new lights as there are often some nice deals for our newsletter subscribers they get some VIP deals very worth doing.
