Help! Hallway and stairs laid bare, ready for Houzz overhall!
Comments (8)Thank you, all, for the input! Finally, following some electrical surprise that needed sorting, this project is fully underway. The hall, stairs and landing have been completely stripped of their nicotine-addled liner paper, and are starting from bare plaster. This means we'll likely take advantage of the once-in-a-blue-moon super-smooth walls and just paint them white, making a feature out of the stair and landing carpet (hall flooring to come next year when we do the rest of the ground floor). The long-wall is north-east facing, and I'd like to be bold with colour, and am leaning toward blue green for dengue shui reasons! Where can I get a Crucial Trading Audrey-esque stair runner in a cooler colour set? Further, my partner has gotten into the idea of being quirky and purchased a set of WWII paratrooper jump lights to install above the door to the downstairs loo (now knows as "the War Room" or "the jump seat"...). So now my bright green mosaic WC (that we'll eventually extend into a wet room) is begging for metro tiles instead. I still want a pop of colour through the door... I was thinking a pretty strong green (again for feng shui reasons) that goes with the stair carpet, and white hexagon tiles or black something-or-others on the floor. Thoughts...??? It's the coordination between spaces that is throwing me!...See MoreLong upstairs corridor ideas
Comments (7)hi ya, couple of ideas to think about with varying degrees of effort/ cost. - Paint the doors? - the 2 end ones in bright colour eg. Red or warm colour and the side doors in a shade up/ down from the walls. This will bring 2 ends closer and push back the sides. - Add group of pictures to one wall. - If changing carpet is an option use stripes to widen hall. - Lighting (track maybe) - directed to the art to draw attention to these to break up the length. - Maybe some pendants - depending on length of hall (2 or 3) - same as that to break up the length. Very rough Photoshop image to show you below some. Best of luck - looking forward to hearing others suggestions and thoughts....See MoreTime to move on to the hallway.
Comments (19)Well, still nothing to report, and we are absolutely no further forward on deciding the paint colours. Last night I went into Homebase after work yet again for a couple more testers - put them up, nahhhhh. This hallway has been a complete nightmare from start to finish and I wish that we'd left it well alone. I suppose in the long-run it'll be worth it, but I'm finding it really hard to muster up any enthusiasm on it now - it's been dragging on for months. @OnePlan: Yeah, I would consider laying the stair runner myself for sure, it's not the laying that was the issue, it was the fact it'd been cut wrong that's the problem, and it looked stupid. However, at the moment, the sooner this room is done the better, I just want to see the back of it, so as the carpet place do the service, I'll happily pay a professional to do it in an afternoon, rather than me spending any more time on it. Also, I have a terrible terrible habit of injuring myself whenever I come into contact with Carpet Grippers. No matter how long or short, removing them from the floor, moving them from the floor to the rubbish container, or even from the rubbish container into the dustbin - my hands always look like I've been attacked with a cheese grater. Seriously, I am 100% certain, that at some point in time when carpet grippers are involved I will need a plaster! @Carolina: Oh don't you worry about that, I've got some scrap paper and a head-full of ideas. Another project is forthcoming (may start this weekend actually) involving an area to the side of our house currently used for dumping things (1m.80 across the back and 2m.24 to the front) Separate thread incoming :)...See MoreWhat colour in my hall - include dado rail and skirting?
Comments (6)Choices choices- its a real tough one. I would LOVE to do one whole colour but my partner draws the line there, he says it will look like a corridor. I really like picture 2 of yours Ki and the top colour in the 2nd one of yours Hampstead looks real nice (black?). I find it hard to tear myself away from dark blues and we have had a mid grey (City Break I think by Crown) in our last house. Im just torn. How about Off Black by Farrow and Ball- will that be too much? Would you keep skirting and dado rail white or paint them the dark colour too?...See MoreJuby R
