Design Dilemma Furniture Home Repair

What to do here?

I’m not sure what to do with this wall, it was a door, it’s now been bricked in on one side, but we kind of like the shape left on the inside which is now a utility room. The depth is 15cm. Should we cover with plaster board and make it a flat wall or is there some kind of feature we could make with it? I’ve been looking at these units. Would that work?

I think I would want to make use of the space and choose practicality over aesthetics, since it’s a utility room, so I wouldn’t board it flat/flush.

Doesn’t mean it shouldn’t look good though. 🙂

I quite like your shelving suggestion, but it might be even better to have some sort of bespoke shelving so it would look more integrated and streamlined.

Is that half height brick wall (with the detergents on top) staying?

Yes the wall is staying, the layout will be like this. The builder is happy to chip away at the wall to make something fit and the other side of the room will be used for coats and shoes. I thought some kind of shoe cube under a bench with coat hooks but would have preferred a rail which would fit more. Currently it’s just a blank wall. Please excuse the mess we’re a family of 5 and it’s constant.

Hello Tanroe, Well you could hang the mirror on that bit of wall and possibly think of a small side table to stand in front of the rad.. Something with long legs that doesn't swamp and prevent the hall from heating up.. It could be a nice little focal point here.. I do like a faux flower and so a lovely arrangement would be gr8 here as they won't wilt! Another thing you could do is to paint the doors, add a shade to the light fitting and possibly consider a slim length and width unit to hang the coats inside.. Perhaps not on that wall where the jacket currently is as you need to be able to open the door.. but possibly somewhere else that is not in view could house a slim coat storage... It means the eye is not drawn directly to dark hanging clothing.. In turn it would open the hall if you were to paint this the same as the wall... A carpenter could possibly make something just wide enough to fit hooks inside to hang and possibly create some shoe holes too... Sliding doors means it's easy to access and roughly the depth of the length of the largest set of feet (shoes) in the house. : ))

Hello, you have some really good options now. Personally what struck me was how many doors there are in this area/area's. It seems to inhibit flow. As you said you seems to always be going "around" items. In the new proposed design I was wondering why you need a table next to a bench with there also being a table in the dining room? As someone else mentioned the powder and utility room seem overly large in comparison to the kitchen and what you want to achieve. Forgive my crude alterations, I had about 5 minutes to spare, here are some other thoughts to the above, but, the best option will really depend on how you want to live in this new area and the functional flow you are after. You can easily keep the wall between the kitchen and dining in place. Or, you can remove all or part of it. If part is structural and small lintel can easily be added (generally). Opening it up will allow more natural light and help with overall flow, however, retaining some of the wall also maintains a degree of privacy and can allow for hanging of art or positioning of other furniture against the retained wall. You could also add a sliding door between the kitchen and dining if you wished, however, this could be a compromise if you can create a cavity slider. The central island bench has an overhang so can easily accommodate breakfast, family dinners, homework in view (put in lots of USB and power outlets in this island). You could also make the bench a bit wide and drop part of the height to a normal table height, although I believe this would compromise the flow. Options also exist to remove some of the dining wall to the hall. But, not knowing the house dynamics this could impact on required noise control and heat/cooling requirements. Again sliders to the dining room/hall way can increase the effective space in both areas. They could be hung externally on the hall side.. Slot windows above the main kitchen bench can also bring in light. WM and Dryer can be incorporated in the kitchen cupboards. So many options. Good luck! Julie An idea of how slot windows can look.

I have terracotta walls in my sitting room and plan to have either peacock or green sofas so we are on the same page! I am struggling a little with the curve - because I love straight lines - but the way it looks in the room you have accessorised shows it doesn't need to be changed. With the accessories I'd be bolder and put something large behind the sofa, not several pictures making a gallery wall - it looks a bit fussy. Or turn the whole wall into a gallery wall with some bigger pictures and some less big. Can you have a rectangular coffee table, too - rather than round? And the same with the rug - a rectangular one would be better I suspect. Overall, though, my view is stick with the colours! There is too much greige in our world and terracotta is such a warm, welcoming and cosy colour.
