thoughts on changing the mirror

Hi,
our lounge is having a very slow makeover. shelves on the left are new and the ones on the right will follow. The whole room has a sort of mid century eclectic feel, we still need new carpet and to paint the walls. I don't like the chimney breast as it looks too pale overall and like it's in a different room somehow. I am thinking of swapping the mirror for a quick solution (it will be a while before paint and carpets!). I'm thinking large gold, bit like the one attached. Will this work do you think?(please forgive the detritus from the dog destroying his toy )

I think you need to paint the chimney breast in a dark colour. With so many items stored on the shelves either side, the chimney breast gets lost. Your eyes are drawn to what’s stored on the shelves.

Helenandy126: Travis Perkins came in at the best, but I have a trade account with them and I bargain hard. If I remember, Furness sold direct but they just couldn't get anywhere near what I wanted to pay. There are thousands of bricks out there, you just need to narrow it down but go with the big names such as Hanson or Ibstock as they'll have close copies of most bricks out there. I'm not sure if the merchants still do this but once you give your site address and your brick, they register it with the manufacturers and then no other merchant can quote, meaning your stuck with their price. That's why you'll then be able to find a close match with another manufacturer so that you can then get another price for the different brick.

I would go with black upvc windows at the front I think they would look really classy and different. I have an original 1930s round bay window fronted house with the original leaded lights they are beautiful mine is one of only two houses on the street with the original windows. As you can imagine they really need replacing but I cannot bear to let them go but if I have to I would be different and go for grey upvc. Or black.

Well, I made it all the way through. You've clearly given this a lot of thought and effort and yes, I really prefer the plan with the Hallway. It actually makes sense for all the rooms not just the lounge. The little corner is that you lose in the lounge by having the Hallway is fairly inconsequential, it just has an armchair in it, and it's and odd shape. So, making it a lovely square room is better. The whole house looks better with the Hallway. Can you change the window position in what I presume is the kitchen at the back? If you have a window on the far wall, you will see daylight, right through from front to back, giving a great visual of the space.

It’s a lovely mirror, but I think you need some colour on those walls first to provide a contrast and interest. A navy would look lovely.

I think a round mirror will make a difference.

I like your fireplace and because both alcoves are quite busy, the chimney breast can (should?) be a more restful affair and as such is already contrasting I think.

Is the space in front of the fireplace always this empty (maybe play area?) or is there some furniture ?

I feel different flooring can make a big difference to the general look and maybe that should be your priority, at least before you make wall colour choices.

thanks everyone. yes I think a rich blue or maybe charcoal will be the thing. But I still think this mirror won't work is stylistically too different.
yes it's empty, it's a play area, between the door and patio doors. sofas are at the other end(where I took the photo). it's not my ideal layout but short of moving the patio doors there's not much to be done! we used to have the sofas closer when the dining table was in here but it cuts off the room.

Wow! I love how much light you get in here. A round mirror would look lovely but I'd advise a less fussy frame as you're shelves have a lot of detail already. This mirror on navy (which you've said you like) is gorgeous and keeps with the gold eclectic vibe you're after. Id definitely recommend thinking of the whole scheme and paint/flooring choices before you get bits though otherwise you might end up wanting to change things again on the way. Hope that helps and enjoy your updates!! I'm sure it will look great in the end.

Totally agree with comments....paint it darker , round , plain mirror but also hang your mirror lower. Your current one is too high .

thanks everyone. Slowly sorting through stuff so it won't be quite as busy, the filing cabinet thing in the corner has just gone thank goodness!
