How to make filled holes invisible on white wall (basic Q)

We have some shelves up on dry wall that we'd like to remove and have the wall be blank. We've used these wall plugs which leaves ~half inch wide hole. There are 12 of them - 2x for each bracket.

What is the best way to approach this? I know i need to;

- Fill each hole with some sort of filler.

- Apply multiple layers

- Sand it down so it's smooth

My question is, on our white walls, will we need to repaint the entire thing, or just the general area? Will a patch of new paint on walls which were last painted white ~5 years ago stick out unless we redo the whole thing?

Thanks for considering this very basic question
