Garden kids play area design dilemma

Hi everyone,

Hoping to get some insight/ideas to place a playhouse/swing for my daughters garden area. Stuck for where to place it so that it has the wow effect. SO we have the grey/pink wendy house and the swing/slide play tower. Painting is not a problem, just the placement, either i dedicate the whole back end for her play area and have an arch way to enter

or i keep the green grass on the left bare and place it all on the right hand side either side of the concrete

any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

What is the concrete area, is it going to be an eating area? If so I wouldn’t put play kit in front of it as you want it directly accessible from the house. I also think having the two bits of play kit together allows more play possibilities. So my vote would be to have them across the back and then keep the front of the garden as the more grown up area.

Plants help with everything. They make any area more exciting, enticing and inviting.

Try googling the Duchess of Cambridge show garden which was at all the major RHS Shows in 2019. There lots of plants which really tough and can cope with kids jumping on them sometimes.

Also according a QED program I saw many years ago, damp grass is the safest surface to land on. Unfortunately completely dry grassed areas with clay soil become as bad as concrete to land on when really dry!

Not design solutions but food for thought.

Hi there, What an exciting development to your home. Would you be looking for an interior designer to help with your plans? We are happy to discuss on here but would be great to be able to draw up plans for this project of yours. Adding on a new space can be tricky and we like to make sure (as much as possible) that the space looks like a natural extension of what is already there - this can be done by minimising nibs and adding joinery to cover any that are necessary to the build. Pocket doors are a great way of moving between spaces but you could also consider a jib door which blends into the wall when shut - this creates a much more open looking space without having lots of visible doorways. Not the best of conditions to work with but not the end of the world. Underground permeable drains are perhaps what your aunt had installed. They are an expensive and disruptive option which is probably only worth undertaking if the ground is seriously boggy whatever the time of year. Plants and trees take up a lot of water so worth getting more plants in. You may find that since you felled the tree the ground around there will be somewhat wetter. However looking at what you already grow in your garden I don’t imagine the boggy conditions you describe are all that bad. Maybe worse in some areas than others. Any hard landscaping you plan to do will probably need deeper foundations which will up the cost but worthwhile if you don’t want your paving to start settling and become uneven. Installing paths along well used routes will keep your feet dry.

Hi Louise, How exciting! I definitely agree with the above about blocking off the doorway. It will really help to create the snug area. I think an L-shape kitchen across the back wall would work great for you. You could have a bank of tall units running along the back (with your American f/f you could also look at putting a top box above it which would make it feel part of the kitchen especially with colour matched end panels either side) where the sofa could be (in front of the door which would be blocked off) and then opt for lower base units and a corner base for the sink run along the small window wall. Bi fold or patio doors would make a great addition for keeping the space light and bright. Or another option would be having the island/dining table across the back wall and having a small L-shape with units running on the garden wall (up to the patio/bi-fold). As Katlucy has suggested in her drawings an island coming off the garden wall would be a good option or you could look at swapping the island and dining table around or using the dining table to help separate off the 'zones'. There's so many options that can be done, I think the best way to get a true indication of what layout would work best would be to get some CAD designs made up. Discuss layout concerns of what doesn't work in your current kitchen and how you currently use your kitchen so that you are able to get this one exactly how you want it. I think your plan is sound. I would probably put a bigger patio near the dining room doors and I probably wouldn’t stress too much about the trampoline because by the time you have finished the building work for the extension and and started on the garden the kids will be growing out of it. I might in it’s place put a shed for bikes with direct access to the drive

Thank you for your input, greatly appreciated

The concrete area is going to be a gazebo seating area, intending to add lights etc to the gazebo to make it dreamy. This is what i have so far

Now i have realised the slide (red box on the drawing) comes out lengthways so now when the kids come out of the slide will go kick into the fence. Any ideas how to bring it all together, be crazy, imagination has no limit - bit of sweat we can get it done
