Garden kids play area design dilemma

Hi everyone,

Hoping to get some insight/ideas to place a playhouse/swing for my daughters garden area. Stuck for where to place it so that it has the wow effect. SO we have the grey/pink wendy house and the swing/slide play tower. Painting is not a problem, just the placement, either i dedicate the whole back end for her play area and have an arch way to enter

or i keep the green grass on the left bare and place it all on the right hand side either side of the concrete

any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

What is the concrete area, is it going to be an eating area? If so I wouldn’t put play kit in front of it as you want it directly accessible from the house. I also think having the two bits of play kit together allows more play possibilities. So my vote would be to have them across the back and then keep the front of the garden as the more grown up area.

Plants help with everything. They make any area more exciting, enticing and inviting.

Try googling the Duchess of Cambridge show garden which was at all the major RHS Shows in 2019. There lots of plants which really tough and can cope with kids jumping on them sometimes.

Also according a QED program I saw many years ago, damp grass is the safest surface to land on. Unfortunately completely dry grassed areas with clay soil become as bad as concrete to land on when really dry!

Not design solutions but food for thought.

@lisamarie1000 it looks like you've got quite a blank canvas to work with there but as well as giving lots of opportunities it can also be quite daunting if you don't know where to start. As a starting point I would look at where the sun falls in the garden as this can be important for growing vegetables and the greenhouse which need to be in as much sun as possible. Draw a plan to scale of the garden and use cut out shapes to represent the different areas (growing area, play area, sitting area etc.). You can place these on the plan and move them around until you get a layout that you are happy with. The size of the shapes needs to be big enough to represent what their use is. You can also base this on the dimensions of the house such as location of windows and doors. Try to avoid pushing everything to the edges as this can just draw attention to the boundaries and make the space feel small. Think about how you would move through the garden to get to the different areas. If you are going to have a path through, it will be more interesting if this isn't just a straight line down the middle. By making the route through have changes in direction you can add focal points (such as the apple tree) and make the garden seem bigger. If space is tight consider growing vegetables mixed in with ornamental plants so that the garden doesn't look like an allotment. Finally think about using screening with tall plants or trellis at various points so that you don't see the whole garden at once. This can also make the garden seem more interesting and enticing.

The makeover commences in the morning. Rather than a complete revamp we have opted for a restoration of the status quo. The flags are to be taken up and relayed with the sunken square (formerly an eighties style brick built bbq) raised onto the same level as the surrounding patio. The wooden edging has had its day and is to be taken up, with new edging (as yet unknown) in its place. Some of the shrubs are also going - one or two of them seem to be existing much like Schrodinger's Cat - the foliage lustrous and waxy whilst the substructure of twigs dried out and brittle. It looks to my untrained eye to be dead but possibly this is due to my ignorance of all things horticultural.

Hi Sonia, vinyl flooring could be another option. Not as ecological and perhaps not as cheap but this site has some fab patterns: https://www.atrafloor.com With regards to painting the walls I'd steer clear of bright yellow (might look like a giant bumble bee with the black furniture) instead you could have a neutral background (pale grey, off white) and hang some colourful artwork. Maybe get the kids involved like doing some handprints on a large canvas. Or you could have a large blackboard so they can do some scribbling. If you want it to look a little more grown up then maybe you could have feature wall with wallpaper, I think a white with gold pattern would look good. The one in the pic is from Graham and Brown, with added bonus as it's wipeable. Blue one is from Cole and Son. Anyway, hope this gives you some inspiration:)

I don't know what everyone likes stylewise or colours but I quite like the houses on the wall in the first pic on the wall where your sofa is. The kids could update the characters in the Windows using decals when they grow out of a phase. It's only paint so easy to paint over when they're teenagers. The rest of the walls i'd do in a scrubbable paint. Where the radiator is i'd add a table like pic 2 but with the shelves underneath the table in pic 3 for craft storage (maybe make it deep enough for a games console in the future). I'd also add cheap shelves above for art and pencil storage etc with bins etc. The desk could be raised when they grow but also used as a tv stand when they're older. The eames chairs are kids one, they're easy to keep clean and quite cheap at £25 (seat height is 32cm) for when they grow out of them. I'd add a rug in the middle and the beanbag by the bookcase. You could add a "once upon a time" or a "read" decal over the bookcase And maybe star bunting or Pom poms over the eaves to cosy up the reading area. l'd add clothes pegs on the cupboard door for their dress up stuff plus a couple of toy bags for lightweight bits. I'd keep the rest of the room free for play (although the existing drawers could be handy) and when they're older add a sofa for tv, PlayStation etc. What type of lights do you have ATM?

Thank you for your input, greatly appreciated

The concrete area is going to be a gazebo seating area, intending to add lights etc to the gazebo to make it dreamy. This is what i have so far

Now i have realised the slide (red box on the drawing) comes out lengthways so now when the kids come out of the slide will go kick into the fence. Any ideas how to bring it all together, be crazy, imagination has no limit - bit of sweat we can get it done
