Panelling either side of the fireplace (but asymmetrical walls)

We are in the process of having a kitchen fitted. We'd like either side of the fireplace to be 'something' but not too overpowering because the kitchen is a dark statement colour.

I think we want panelling either side of the fireplace. If we get half-height panelling up to around midway, that's nice and simple. But I think we'd prefer full-height. If we go for full-height how could we deal with the difference in height between the two walls, and how could we take the panelling up diagonally (on the yellow wall). Has anybody seen any examples?

Or you could go rogue and do something non-symmetrical. Would draw a design out on paper first. Since it needs some careful measuring so you won't end up with slightly weird cut off sections as in your photo above. Some different examples:

Note: not really asking about colour here, I think all white, more about how we can design the panelling. Thanks again.

Just found this, I suppose it's an option. Although there is a difference in width too, so it might be 'cut off' too much.

I think your fireplace is lovely and I love the warm honey tone of the bricks. Many fireplaces aren’t symmetrical, mine isn’t. I think it would be sacrilege to cover it up. Such a lovely cosy room. If you really hate it then you could remove the bricks and plaster the wall, or remove the bricks and put in a wooden fire surround and paint that. I like Ribena‘s idea - candles or even electrical lighting can create warmth, or maybe an electric faux log burner,.

Thank you plusmarcus. So my thought about the side panels was how do you decide where the bedsides go? Do they sit in the middle of the side panels or do they sit so that the two beads line up with the middle of the bedsides? If you put the bedside in the middle of the side panel they are too far from the bed. And if you put them so the beads are in the middle of bedside they are too close? With the original "B" photo I wondered how the proportions would work with bedsides. Would bigger bedsides in the same style as the bed work better? Sorry might just be my OCD, but where you have them now, for me, throws off the original proportions.

I think you could do a two flanking a giant one to pick out the furniture, maybe like this: Uses the first three colour tests on the wall and some antiqued mirror infill for the sides, you could even incorporate LED strip lighting into the panel Beeding to breath a gentle mood light onto the wall and mirrors? The light switch could be easily dealt with, if you're laying panelling onto the wall just make sure its about the same thickness as the switch and its cut to fit flush around it, you can then paint the fitting to match, leave as is or change it to a stylish one to match the room.

Hi Daniel, what a great space! Looks like it's coming along nicely.

Were you planning to do the panelling yourself or get a joiner in to complete this? Because the walls are different heights and widths it will just be a case of trying to cut it off at the best point, or only panelling up to a certain height to level out the difference. You could also leave a deliberate non-panelled border?

If you're not 100% set on the panelling, what about using one alcove for a picture gallery and the other with simple floating shelves. Both make great use of the space (offering more storage with the shelves) and by using them for different things it hides the asymmetry. When they get used for the same purpose or have the same décor (such as the panelling) because they're different shapes, the comparison highlights the differences.

Treat the yellow wall as the same as the green but with a bit extra on top, so line the panelling up for the green on both and then fill above the yellow with a bit extra.

Run the panelling up to picture rail height (perhaps also including the chimney breast itself) and paint it a different colour from the ceiling. The contrast will distract the eye and minimise the asymmetrical heights. The trick will be in the choosing the colours if you’re already going strong in the kitchen.
