stair carpets - plain or design?

Hi guys

So we’re in a 1910 sandstone villa - I have three kids and just decorated and lowered ceilings to add spotlights etc.

What kind of carpet will look good now with banisters painted? I had a thing for stripes the last time but I can’t seem to find anything that catches my eye.

Help please!

With three kids I would want something practical and non plain, like this perhaps?

Ooo I like this ! I looked at lots of carpets but I noticed with non plain carpets that people tend to put them down the middle of the stair with sides bare for a contrast - I don’t want to do that yet as will need to get stairs sanded and painted (my husband just finished the bannisters and has swore he wouldn’t do it again lol)

I disagree with the above comment. A competent carpet fitter can match a small pattern or stripe on the stairs with minimal waste. In a windowless area you can’t introduce pattern or interest with curtains but of course you can with carpet. Lastly a patterned carpet is very practical for a heavy use area showing up discolouration much less than a plain carpet. Personally I think that you choose the pale carpet you like for the principal rooms and then find a pattern that includes this colour for a cohesive look in the hallway.

Personally I’d go for neutral carpets, they should in theory last a lot longer than paint then you’re not so tied to a colour palette when you want to change a room. I’d lift the neutral walls with accent colours for art and accessories and plants will also add some life

Hi there,

If you wanted something non traditional, and happy to put the time in, something like this would fit perfectly. Of course the pattern and colour could be changed down to your preference. I think these are make such a beautiful statement but are also very hard wearing and practical for the kids. This look can easily be achieved with tile stickers just as well as standard tiles.

If you are still set on carpet, have you thought about checked carpet instead of stirpes?

I love a statement stair carpet. Mine is a colourful stripy one from Crucial Trading. I do rather like the herringbone ones too. If you go to a “proper” independent flooring shop, you will get a lot more choice too. Here’s some ideas
