Rectifying Regrettable Choice of Bricks

Hi. Looking for some advice. We had a new front garden wall built this summer and now regret the choice of bricks. We wanted reclaimed London stock and in retrospect, should have gone for mixed reds or mixed yellows, not mix of both! The colours are too intense and varied and just not giving the look we hoped for. They looked more consistent in the pallet but I think that's because they were dusty. We are wondering if a light lime wash or brick tint would help to level out and dull the colours as areas where there's natural efflorescence, we think looks better. Really appreciate any design thoughts or ideas on technical approach. Thanks!

Can you share photos that show more of the context of your house and street?

Will you add railings or similar?

No intention to add railings. The choice was tough in the first place as our side of the road of Edwardian semis was unfortunately rendered in years past and so now painted whereas the opposite side of the road is red brick front elevation. All of the houses though have lesser grade yellow stocks for side and back.

I have always bought wrecks - I love renovating: and I completely agree with overpaying for a new renovation that is rubbish and soulless: I won't even view a house that has obviously been done up by one of the many "property developers" that infest London. I can cope with anything (have rectified asbestos, removed wood chip, put back period features and replaced everything from roof to digging up a floor to install underfloor heating in the past), but my absolute nos: dodgy neighbours/road, lack of off-street parking (London), a floor plan I can do nothing with, lack of potential to add value myself. I have seen (and met) some real horrors whilst looking for houses! Also, I have to have a period house: 1930s or older.

Hi original poster! I know it’s 7 years since you asked this but would love to know what you did. We are not in a similar position with a similar looking house at the back but even steeper. I know that a full extension and lowering the internal floors would be ideal but we can’t afford that and need a 5-7 year fix. Please let us know what you decided and why ☺️

Thanks again for all your comments. Particularly helpful to be alerted to socket issue. I took these pics before the builder replaced the sockets with some nice chrome ones. (see new pics) However, he's still got them in the wrong place. Will raise that today. He hasn't actually finished the hood area in these pictures - as I stopped him. But also the chimney extractor doesn't seem to be functioning so it needs to come down anyway. This solves this problem and we can tile behind it - although I'm still worried that he's not going to be able to redo the job well enough. I've added some more pics with better light. Still finishing the floor and just have to adjust and tweak a few things but (apart from tiling) nearly there! The kitchen is Howdens Burford Grey, Pure White Quartz from Master Quartz (not been impressed with this as marking so easily with pans, belt buckles, any kind of grime - but probably shouldn't have chosen white! - anyone else had problems with their quartz?), Paint mainly F&B Wimborne White and Slipper Satin woodwork, engineered oak floor from Howdens.

I’m glad I found this post. Feeling like I could cry. Just had front and back of the house rendered in Atlas ‘off white’ (renderer said white was too stark) so went with off white…The colour looks like it has a tinge of pink/lilac/grey to it 😭 😭😭 Feeling very depressed as it was a big job. I was advised by the renderers to repaint using silicone paint.

Yes, lovely house, lovely street.

Quite like the bricks too. I suspect you were trying to mix the different colours in the area instead of picking one.

My feeling is you‘ll probably get used to the look and learn to like it, particularly when your greenery is establishing further. I wouldn’t mess with the brick

You could perhaps consider pier caps and coping stones on the top to make it look more finished and possibly paint those in the colour of your house.

Thanks for the votes of confidence thus far. I have considered coping stones actually, but the top row of bricks would need to be removed and I fear I'd still not get over the colour. @E D, I think you're absolutely right about the root cause - indecision of red vs yellow. I also didn't have the most communicative nor design oriented landscaper and it all happened quicker than I would have liked, didn't get enough of a chance to really understand what the end result would look like.

It looks a lovely house. Personally I would paint the fence (and maybe the gate ) in a dark colour to lose the wheelie bins. Or you could get a wheelie bin cover but I think the fence would look smarter in a dark colour and would work with the tiles

time will heal the problem. if you wait by next year it will all tone done and look more harmonious. if you want to accelerate the weathering you could brush the lower sections with diluted yogurt
