Design Dilemma Living Rooms

Have no clue where to start with colour for living room walls

I really want to get more colour in this room. It's currently Timeless, but it's looking very grubby. I'd like to keep the curtains and cushions (I think they're Sanderson and were quite expensive when I got them, and I still really like them)

The rug is green, but also a bit shabby so happy to swap that too if necessary

The room is north facing, with lovely mature trees across the road, so not ever very bright. We use it mainly at night, but I think a dark colour would be off next to the curtains.

Don't want grey, I think it would look very dreary. A green might clash? And blue would also be tricky.

Help!!

Hi! It's great you want to add colour to the room, that's my favourite type of room :) Looking at the curtains and cushions, on screen, there looks to be a yellow toned green in both, so this could be an option for the walls. Pickleson Paint do a nice pale green that should pick up on these colours, it's called 'Aegean Sage'. With a North facing room, you either want to embrace the cooler darker light with a bold colour to create a cosy feel, or use yellow toned whites or neutrals to help bounce the light round the room.

Breaking my own rule here in advising without doing a board but try two stronger neutrals that pick up the shades in the fabrics: one on the wall on the left facing the window and the window wall itself, the paler one on the other two.

Suggested combinations:

Little Greene PC - Limestone and Tusk;

LGPC - French Grey and French Grey Pale;

LGPC - Slaked Lime Deep and Slaked Lime Mid

I think these would work with your rug too.

You might feel happier if the room was reconfigured. Some wrapped around shelving would help to restore balance on the vertical plane and tie the shades together.

I completely agree with Matthew! It looks like you have a lot that you want to change. Pretty daunting and costly when you look at it all together. I would give yourself wee targets. One room this month, another next month, for example. Then the ground floor outside/ inside this year. Upstairs next year. It will ensure that you are seeing yourself move forwards. The danger of trying to do too much at once, unless you have a huge team behind you, is that you will feel like you are getting no-where. Pretty demotivating. One step at a time. Nautral colours are always a great base too. It will look clean, fresh and be a blank canvass for your next project. Alternatively with neutral colurs, just new soft furnishings will changethe feel of a room incredibly... Looks exciting though!! Imagine when it is done and all in your own style :)

You can probably get away with any colour if they're old brick which I suspect they are? If it's really modern red brick, then shades of blue, grey, white, green would work. In terms of painting it grey do you know which way the room faces and how much light it gets? If it has little light there are still a few paler greys that would work. The curtains are very dark so that doesn't help. If you're seeing clients I would probably go for a pale grey ( I don't know what type of clients they are but am assuming a calm, light environment is needed?!) Do you have any existing furniture to put in the room? I only ask as there are thousands of paint colours so it's normally easier to pick wall colour after the sofa etc.

Thanks so much everyone for taking the time to respond. Much appreciated. So I'm kind of stuck with the chaise as it is but could move it to another room (at the cost of moving the problem elsewhere). It's not actually mine so I don't really want to go to the expense of reupholstering it. The chest also isn't mine, but I'll have them both for a few years yet. If I move the chaise I'd probably have to swap it for a deep red rocking chair I have in another room (see pic), which would again influence the colour scheme. The sofa would fit under the window but there's a radiator there so it's not really ideal. I'll look into moving the TV point though as that would allow me to have chaise / rocking chair and sofa on two walls together. I agree that the blinds are an issue so I think I'll try to get either a glass covering instead, or some white blinds. I may even paint the windows white too if I'm brave enough. For the walls, I liked your mock up Carolins and the suggestions to use a light grey. That's what I was already considering. Still can't decide whether to have a dark grey feature wall, but it's tempting. I agree with the accent colour suggestions - I really like pink or yellow with grey. Carolins - where are those yellow toned cushions from? Definitely a big mirror too. Hmm decision time!

As you have small touches of blue in the curtains and cushions, how about F&B Oval Room Blue? It is a beautiful classic colour. It would look fab with your lovely artwork. It is quite a deep shade so worth getting a matchpot to try it out, but it’s not as dark as the navy’s. Then you could get a patterned rug in a similar shade, something in an oriental style. Even a red/pink oriental style rug would look amazing with the blue.

I was looking at that sort of shade - was worried it would clash, but glad someone else thinks it would be Ok!

Hi Daffodilpots, I love your prints. Have you thought about colour blocking? You could add colour blocks behind your artwork or do a wraparound. It's really easy to do yourself, just make sure you invest in quality frog tap!
