Renovating Fireplaces

lining a Victorian fireplace

We renovating a Grade II Victorian home and we want to line the 3 fireplaces with slip bricks to form a herringbone pattern but I am finding it hard to find thin slip bricks in order to make the said lining more elegant. I am finding it hard to source a supplier can you help please?

To me it looks like the original fireplaces are long gone as it's not very likely that the current fireplaces are just covering old ones. The original openings may be under there but anymore than that is very unlikely. Plus two of yours look like they may have been done in the 60s/70s and back then people liked to rip things out! Like the last reply said, it doesn't look deep enough to have anything but wall behind them. If I was you I'd go and source some Victorian or Edwardian fireplaces to replace your current ones with (if that is what you want to do of course). Good luck!

Hi Nancy. I agree with SJD on the tiles. I know you don't like it but the bit that stands out to me is the white plasterboard at the back as there's so much of a contrast. I would either paint that a stone colour or go lighter on the surround. If it wasn't rented then perhaps you could actually pop a fire in but I don't know if it's worth the money? How deep is the hearth? Could you look at putting something decorative in there? I would also add a mirror or art above (something with a bit of wow to detract your eye) and maybe keep accessories to 2/3 larger things

There is a little show at the Cherry Tree village (just south of Southgate) that has a lot of this type of fireplace for sale. My daughter bought one which was initially rusty and the shop made it beautiful. They also offered her a good choice of tile to go in the sides.

Hello Apismalifica, If the room is really large then it's possible the fireplace is actually right size wise, if it's still the original proportions and you'll see if the chimney breast and fire are proportional. In a lot of cases they are filled in and made smaller at later dates such as the 30's so you'd notice. You've said it's not proportional and so perhaps the room has been divided at some point.. Really the key thing is to identify whether it can sit in the room without looking odd. Secondly a kitchen layout that doesn't mean removing the fireplace but as others have said possibly making use of it somehow like installing an aga or something - if it's a big room it may be possible to keep it as a feature or re-instate it's use and have a galley along the opposite wall for example? So you have both kitchen and fireplace... Pictures would indeed be good but I usually like to work with period features.. Regardless of whether you have another, see how you can work with the room.. : ))
