Design Dilemma Kitchens

anyone has compact laminate as a kitchen worktop?

i am deciding between compact laminate or seeing if can stretch to quartz. having compact laminate also means i cant have a hidden cutlery drawer in pan drawer but i dont mind if the cutlery drawer has to be separate. the other issue is with the sink, i cant fit an undermounted sink with compact laminate apparently? is this true?

We know compact laminate worktops as solid laminate worktops. They are hard wearing and hard to cut as fitters.

You can have an undermount sink and also drainer grooves if you wish. We’d fabricated and fitted them.

As they’re normally only 12mm (if this is what you’re referring to) then you just have to be cautious what goes under a hob because of the depth.

Evolve and Aria are 2 good brands.

As opposed to Quartz look at Solid Surface. Look at Mirostone and Pietra.

I have just had compact/solid laminate tops installed. I love them. Sink undermounted with no issues

I recently did my kitchen and utility room and was determined to have a trendy birch ply formica kitchen. However, the cost was prohibitive so we opted for an oak ikea one and made it a bit edgy by using slate tiling and really deep wall colour in places. We used birch ply formica in the utility room and in the kitchen used a thin skin of granite over MDF from a place called Granite Transformations. All in we saved a lot of money by being creative. I actually despair of seeing all of these 'bankers bonus kitchens' as it feels a bit out of most people's reach. Good luck.

Most worktop suppliers will provide customers with a free sample of worktop providing you don't ask for lots. You can get their information on their websites to request this. In our workshop we have samples of Axiom, Prima, Odyssey, Duropal, Egger and own brands. We are Staffordshire based. Out of all of the above Duropal and Egger are the most boring. There is nothing eye catching in any of their worktops. Prima and Axiom have added some new designs to their ranges but it all depends on whether you want to play safe or dare to be different.

Has anyone used a laminate floor that looks like herringbone parquet?

Hi Sara, we have just laid a luxury vinyl tile in a herringbone pattern throughout our extension. We used Moduleo mainly as I preferred their colour and look of the tiles over the more famous brands like Amtico and Karndean (although they have some gorgeous colours too). Moduleo is also a bit cheaper than the bigger brands. We are really pleased with the look and feel . I looked into getting laminate but the showrooms I looked at told me they didn’t lay the laminate boards in a herringbone pattern. You might find others that do though? We were also advised that the luxury vinyl tiles would be better for kitchen areas etc as can’t damage them with water/spills etc. We debated this very question for ages!
