Kitchen island - urgent advise

Hello, we have a couple of options on the kitchen island so that we are able to sit as many people possible around it. The purpose of the island is mainly a table to sit/eat and then also a storage as we have 2 cupboards below. With the current set-up we can sit up to 6 people (3 on the long side, 2 on the smaller side and one more opposite). The island is 1.95m by 1.2m.

Our kitchen supplier sent us their ideas with regards to the leg / support we need - as per photos below. I am not sure...i think i like the one with the two inox legs, but also the one with the glass in the middle is nice. The 2 inox legs make it look more complete...if i may say, while the glass leg option provides more flexibility.... They told us the 2 legs options can only be inox. Which one would you go with? Any other idea? I also thought about having a smaller (narrower) cupboard below that would run longer than what's shown in the photo. However in this case, the cupboards would be recessed +35-40cm inside and therefore making it unpractical to open the drawers, no?

I much prefer the look of the glass support, and it will be more flexible for seating. Slightly more chance of the worktop snapping though.

I don’t think there is much point in a cupboard that is 35cm recessed with breakfast bar and stools in front of it. We have a shallow cupboard behind our breakfast stools and it’s used for things that we need maybe 3 times a year.

One further option - do you have enough space to extend the island length a little so that you could fit 4 stools down one side and 2 on the end? This will mean you can have cupboards/drawers almost all the way down the other side and would also help a lot with support (you could probably do away with any legs). I can’t see the full room but from the mock up it looks like there might be space.

Thank you so much! There is 95cm left between the island and the kitchen cupboard. I think this is the minimum needed. I could also extend the cupboard below the island with the current plan and simply not leave space for that one seat on the other side, but rather have 3 on the length and 2 on the side?

As I can see that you dearly need more storage space !!! The Myson needs a depth of 302mm so you could use half depth tall or base cabinets or if the room lends itself to it - ie without cramping the entrance and exits - you have a full size DW to fit in - ideally near the sink and bin would be better than where it is now - but you also need to avoid putting it in the corners or when it's open you won't be able to reach across to put anything away ! Its always tricky to advise with no measurements - and no info about you or your family - or on wether you are looking to do this on a tight budget or a lavish one ! If you are looking to just do it up and sell the home - my advice would be to nip into your local kitchen shop and seek their advice and planning service as a generic kitchen plan would be fine for this purpose. If this is your home for a good few years yet - then I'd suggest getting a design done specifically for you, to suit not only the room - but how you cook, how much storage you need and how much prep area you need too etc etc - a bank of Tall units might well be the way to go - but it does take away worktop space, and the hatch ( if you use it ) - there may be other options - had you thought about including the dining room to make the space one large kitchen diner ?! Or having tall but half depth cabinets along one side to give easy access storage and a longer sink run ? Having a built under fridge and freezer or moving the current one to what might be storage behind one of those doors like Lisa suggested ? That way there may even be room for a freestanding chopping block or modern mini moveable island in the middle of the room - if that's the kind of thing that would work for you ?! Depending on what's behind those solid doors - You could even consider blocking up the back door and changing part of the window to a door and having a galley kitchen ?! There are so many options - (and so many unknowns ) a designer needs to know more about you, your budget and your hopes and dreams for the place ! Don't limit yourself to just replicating what's there !!! Hiring an independent kitchen designer isn't expensive - and shopping around can save you so much more than the design fee ! I know - as my clients tell me this all the time !!! Sorry that turned into a small book ! And my coffee has gone cold ! Coffee break over - will need to microwave it !!! ;-)

I would lose the wooden counter top and pull out larder. Put the hob next door but one to the sink with an extractor above. This will break up the run of wall units. Also think about when you are cooking pasta, filling up a saucepan with water and then draining it. You don't need to cross the room. Where you going to put bin, dishwasher and microwave? I would agree you need more drawers. I love my new pan drawers they hold alot. But my pull out larder does not and things fall down the back all the time. Also when you are taking something out of the oven, where are you going to put it? I never understand why designers put oven and fridges next to one another.

you've done it basically right, whether you need the 2 internal support panels really depends on the worktop you're having as you could possibly get away with not using them. if you do use the 2 support panels, you'll have to reduce their depth so they're in line with the panels at the end, i'd also cut out a square at the bottom of the 2 support panels so the plinth can run through in one piece instead of 3 bits, i'd also make some 600-602mm strips to go between each panel at the front/top and use a pocket drill jig (google pocket drill jig) to fix so the panels are all fixed together (these would be stepped back 20mm so the door can close) and it gives you something to fix the appliances to. i'd also fit the doors before getting to far as integrated fridges are awkward doors to fit and line up as when the door opens it can catch on the panels at the side and to adjust the door you may need to adjust the legs. the final look should be all the edges of the 4 panels should be flush with the front of the 3 doors. the other thing i can see in the picture is you've put a couple of brackets to fix the end panels to the floor and you'll see them as they wont be behind the plinth. good luck

thank you for the comments. I agree about the recessed downlights over the task areas. I'm trying to work out how many. I keep reading not to have them in a grid, what does that mean exactly? As in straight lines? The ceiling height is 2.4 meters. I was thinking of a John Lewis pendant light over the table and in the seating area. Plus a strip light on the bottom of the island, the part facing the seating area. I so want to get this right. It started off with recessed downlights everywhere and then I had time to think about it properly and decided that would not be good. I really appreciate the input as it's all such a stress, a good stress but time is not on my side.

Hi, I meant extend the island lengthways, ie towards whatever is opposite that white wall. What’s at that end of the room, is it doors to the garden? How much space is there around that end of the island?

Hi, there is 0.9-1m space around the island on all sides.

Worktop needs support but can cope with a 300mm overhang usually - so if you had two 800 cupboards ( not drawers ) set 50mm off the side with 50mm infill to wall) and central to the worktop - you’d have overhang on three sides to sit at . This would probably by the most stable solution and give a very good space for bar seating three on each side - enabling people to walk past on the end if only 1m ish available there - if you seat people all around as your proposed idea it might gain you some drawers - but will be tight for walking past on all three sides.... allow yourself one free walkway !
