Living room layout advice

Hi I'm moving into a rented property where the front door leads pretty much straight into the living room with a small 'hallway' area first. It is the walk-through room the the kitchen with a staircase on one side of the room and a fireplace on the other side. Wondering what your advice would be in terms of layout for the room. I have a 200cm long sofa and an 83cm wide small armchair.*photos in the comments* **none of the furniture in the photos is staying as it's not ours**

So since I posted about 6 weeks ago we now have a lovely wooden floor, fire has been removed and left chimney breast with cables available so we can mount the TV. Have our old sofas sat side by side under the window but still not sure how to plan it all out. Hopefully once painted and we start visiting some furniture shops the rest will just fall into place :) thanks all for comments, would welcome any ideas

You able to post other walls in the room to get better idea of room layout ? The tv istoo big for narrow chimney breast and will look odd. Don’t take this wrong way but the shelves you had done look too thin seems like the bowing a bit due to amount of things on them carepenter should have made them alot more chunky to give it that modern look or put a thick trim on front of each shelf to give it that illusion also would work nice with the cabinets below you have . I would put a fake fireplace. With nice round mirror and if possible move the tv to one of the other walls in the room colour wise I either paint all walls pure white or nice soft grey like cloud burst By crown or dulux or elephants breath. white personally will just lighten up the whole room giving it contemporary look. White is very underrated but has a whole lot of colour spectrum with in it creating different shades with room light

Carolina, thank you, you give so much time to thas - it has given us loads to think about. We really would need to get used to the room being divided by the sofa though. We have had it that way but it made the room very small and squashed,feeling we were all sitting so close to the fire and the rest of the room unused. I have also had two 3 seater sofas coming out from the fireplace, facing each other, with a table between. I liked that as it opened the room up and it felt 'social', my partner liked it less because of difficulty viewing the tv. At the minute Ring the sofas form more of an L shape, on the wall to the left and the wall facing the windows. With the TV between the windows we can all watch TV and see the fire, without sitting behind each other. The open space is great. The downside of this layout is that if as a family we are sitting on both sofas some people can't see each other so conversation is difficult. Another thought for me was 2 of the Harrington chaise sofas - as one would fit in front of the window and stretch into the alcove beside the fire, the other would sit facing the TV and wouldn't stick out beyond the wall where the door is. This would be great for seeing each other and talking. There would still be space for 2 chairs or a sofa on the left hand wall. Unfortunately for good family time, the compromise might have to be 'looks'.

Hi,

Lovely room, with that awesome fireplace. It's a bit difficult without knowing the dimensions of the room, but I suspect that the only wall that can take your sofa is the wall opposite the window? Another option might be to put the sofa in front of the fireplace, but that means you'll have an awkward space behind it, under the stairs and you'll always have to walk around it.

So, I'd do something like this (obv. mirror immage):

I would put the TV next to the fireplace, not in front of the window as it is in the photos. You want to maximse the light, not block it with a TV. So TV against the wall, maybe on a pull out cabinet (a cabinet with (added) wheels under it), to make viewing easier. And the chair in front of the window wall, angled towards sofa, fireplace and TV.

Thank you Carolina that's really helpful! Yes so the wall opposite the window is 11ft I believe so sofa would fit nicely there. The only thing is was we would prefer to have the tv mounted on the wall and this would be the only wall to be able to do that on. What do you think if I flipped your idea around the other way that the sofa could block too much light from the window? It can be placed away from the window so the front of the sofa comes right up to the hearth. And plenty of room to walk between the back of the sofa and the window but not sure if that would look right?

Are you allowed to mount the TV on the wall? And why do you want to mount it on the wall? It doesn't make it easier to hide the cables. And visible cables always look messy. Much easier to just put it on a cabinet or media unit.

You could definitely try the layout with the sofa under the window, but I wouldn't pull the sofa forward too much though.

I still prefer the layout I suggested, because psychologically it feels better to be able to see the window and the door and not have them both behind you. But do try out both layouts, before you mount the TV on the wall.

Do not put the TV too high up on the wall. The centre of the screen should be at about eye level when you're sitting down.

Layout is a bit like my living room, but my staircase is in the hall (very tiny!). Therefore I think your long sofa would look great next to the fireplace where the row of dining chairs are. You might be able to get another sofa under the stairs, or maybe 2 armchairs as I can see it’s a through room, like mine. I much prefer a tv on a stand rather than on the wall. It’s easy to slide the tv one way or another and it hides all the endless amount of cabling they entail. As Carolina asks, would the landlord allow you to attach it to a wall? Usually you cannot even hand up a picture........😊
