Advice about a hob please

Hi, I am looking for a 5 burner gas hob (OH has a pacemaker so induction is out and I have never been a fan of electric hobs). I like the look of this one as the plan is for a white worktop but have never come across the Millar brand before. Do any of you have any experience of it? Any recommendations for Gad hobs generally? Thank you.

I thought I’d heard of most brands but have never heard of these. Had to Google them. Mixed reviews.

Coincidentally they have the same surname as my work unit landlord and I wouldn’t trust them with a bargepole 😂😂😂.

I am on my second induction hob. Both in an island. Would I swap back to gas (which was what I had previously) not a chance. Induction all the way. It's economical to run, fast as most rings have booster buttons and very clean. Image cooking a frying pan of bacon and sausage. The spit of the fat goes everywhere. With gas you have to dismantle the whole top of the hob. With an induction hob you spray with something like Ciff and wipe off with a damp cloth. Buff with a microfibre cloth and hey presto done. My first was an AEG which was brilliant. Almost 10 years later and poof, caput. I now have a Bosch which is excellent but doesn't have the option of having the booster on every ring at the same time. Just a small thing, other to that no difference between the two. Choose no edging on for easy clean and no knobs. I cannot praise the invention of induction jobs enough. Absolutely marvellous.

If you look above you will see I answered this question in 2018. I must repeat get hold or the manufacturer of the gas hob. La Cornue which I used to be the exclusive importer of from France has huge burners, which are commercial in size and use, so 150mm would not be nearly enough on one. The manufacturer will have done tests and should be able to give definitive guidance. Don’t forget if you put a pan on the hob the flame will span out far further under it. On Monday I would get hold of the manufacturer - I hope that helps.

You’re keeping the inner door? Would the inner door fit on the porch outside area which would keep the outside of the house in the same colour frames/doors and then have something more glass orientated inside so it’s not dark with the porch added. I do think that the dark beams aren’t in keeping with the oak coloured windows and doors though.

Hmm, I might be wrong but my understanding is that a recirculating extractor doesn't get rid of steam, only grease and smells. It's confusing - I read lots about it and didn't find many definitive answers - but my understanding was that if we had a recirculating-only cooktop extractor, we would also benefit from a wall mounted expelair type extractor too, which we didn't want. Hence we went for an exhaust air model as we wanted ours to do the whole job. The bit where it ducts out has a system whereby it only opens when its extracting - and the ducting is several metres long so there's no sense of cold air coming up through the hob top, even on these recent very cold, windy and frosty days. I can only say that in my experience, if you want an island hob exhaust air model (as opposed to recirculating), there are costs which are additional to the cost of the hob itself - ie the ducting pipes and the work that goes into planning and executing the ducting under the floor and out to the open air. The position of the ducting has to be millimetre perfect at quite an early stage of the build so we had a lot of head scratching and very careful work to make sure that our kitchen plan and the position of the ducting were exactly aligned. We've paid our builder a day rate so there's definitely been an extra, if slightly undefinable, cost there. Perhaps in some cases it's very straightforward but in ours it wasn't, and as I said the ducting itself isn't cheap (around £100/m) - so in a direct comparison between a recirculating and a ducting version of the same cooktop (where the cooktops themselves cost exactly the same) the ducting one was a more expensive option for us, but one we're glad we went for. I should say we're in a 1930s house, which, although we're doing our best to make it energy efficient, is never going to be airtight like a passiv haus. So for us the benefit of getting rid of steam outweighs any potential small energy loss through the ducting to the outside. Of course everything I've said above may be rubbish... I'm just a girl trying to do a renovation with conflicting advice from all sides... :)

I think this looks great. If you choose a more expensive brand however you will get more powerful burners. More powerful burners cook faster and are important for Asian cooking

@Jonathan thanks. I actually do a lot of Asian cooking and use the hob a lot so probably should look for more powerful burners. I hadn’t seen a white gas hob before and I liked the flatness of the surface. Style over substance which is probably not a good thing in a new kitchen for someone who cooks a lot! I guess a powerful extractor is also important. Appliances are a minefield! Thanks again to you both for taking the time to comment. Kim

Wolf is what they use on Saturday kitchen with Matt Tebbutt .

Just looked up Wolf and it said £POA so definitely outside my budget 😂. I thought white might be fun but thinking it may be better to stick to black or SS now and a brand I know. I really appreciate everyone’s help.

I was watching the cooking programme on TV this morning and noticed the oven was Wolf.

KitchenAid make gas hobs that have a Wolf industrial look to them but without their price tag. Mainly these are only available through kitchen specialists.

Thanks Jonathan - I didn’t know KitchenAid did hobs (I don’t seem to know much 😂). They look good and price isn’t too bad. I shall look for some reviews. Do you know if any issues with fitting this sort of hob in 20mm worktop by any chance? Thanks again.

With the thinner worktops and hobs its more to do with whats underneath the hob, lots of hob instructions advise the fitting of a heat resistant board so if the hob is over a cutlery drawer for example the drawer box might have to be either lowered or removed completely and you just have a dummy drawer. If your gas fitter looks at the fitting instructions he/she may insist on the heatboard.

Thanks @Lifestyle Kitchens. We have been to DIY kitchens showroom today. It was the first time we had seen a Dekton worktop in a display kitchen and neither of us like the edges or the 20mm depth. I think we will go for Quartz now and I will become obsessive about wiping up spills!

You should save yourself some money as well by choosing quartz over dekton.

Absolutely - it looked like it was going to be about the same price and the X gloss is beautiful and so incredibly stain resistant but I think the price I’d seen was actually for the more industrial look and I just don’t like the feel of it. I have also noticed chips on a few of the Dekton samples I have seen. I don’t think there is a perfect worktop.
@Daisy England I now really understand what you mean about the clash of whites - you definitely need to actually see them together to be sure the white isn’t really more cream, or grey or even pink! Your tip helped us to avoid a worktop disaster so thank you!
