Wanting to make our fireplace useable

Hi,
I am just after some advise on how I can make the main fireplace in my new home useable.
House is 1930’s I don’t think this is the original surround (seems to be wood) and I don’t think the insert (seems to be cast iron but we can push it back and forward which seems odd) is original either but I can’t be sure.
I would love to make it back into a wood burning fire as I grew up with one and loved it But I just don’t know where to start.
Would it be best to purchase a more inkeeping/previously working surround and insert to have fitted in this ones place or this there a way we can make use of this? Sorry if that’s a silly question but it’s all kew learning to me.
thank you :)
