Raised Flowerbed on brick paved drive

Hello! I want to put a raise flowerbed in, up the right hand side. We have brick paving (see pic).
Does anybody know how to do this? Can we do it straight over the brick paving or does some of the paving need to be removed? Hoping to do this ourselves rather than using a company. Also what material would people recommend using - brick/wooden sleepers/other. I just want to add a couple of small bushes with loads of tulips and lilies that I used to have in the back garden before we got our dog and I had to dig them all up! 😂 Any advice appreciated!

I recently ripped up my front drive at My Claybrick Home and used a combination of both resin and block paving for the drive.

To break up the hard materials I then had sleeper planters which still need some planting up to bring some interest to the space. I think they bring some warm to the space and I am looking forward to them flourishing and breaking up some of the harder lines.

Yes You do need to remove the blocks where the bed is going. If you are cutting them yourself it will be easiest to cut a good line with them in-situ. Be careful with using all the appropriate protection or avoid all the terrible by getting a professional with a vacuum or water cutting arrangement to do it.

When the blocks are removed you need to be quick to replace a retaining edge (your raised bed walls) so that the integrity of the drive is not compromised.

Hi Eve, Well done for taking on a design project. Always an exciting challenge and by the looks of it you've done yourself proud. I know it's a bit late in the day to give any suggestions but perhaps you could put them to one side for a rainy day? Looking at your patio layout I would suggest a slight tweak in order to have some coherence with the circular or rather flowing feel you have tried to create. Notice how in my quick scribble I've taken out the sharp corners of the paving by making a curved edge, which is easily achieved by cutting the stone to suit the site, such as natural sandstone or preferably dark material such as slate. To hide the cut edges you can install edging cobbles or blocks with small low profile led lights interspersed between the edging blocks? Please see attached scribble to see what I mean. Second thing and this is of course completely budget dependent is because you already have a lovely stark white fence you might want to consider contrasting that with a dark material for your hard landscaping such as a nice slate or dark black limestone pavers? Sometimes small projects bring as much satisfaction as big ones. I decided that the kitchen fireplace needed some dressing. Decided to do it myself. Used the rusted old fireplace bought years ago on ebay, and kept it rusty. Tiled with crackle glazed tiles, washed with black grout to accent the crackles and give the impression of age, grouted in olive green. Then took some lengths of steel and rusted them with peroxide, vinegar and salt. Chopped them up with a mitre saw. Result is a nicely aged looking, rustic fire surround in tiles and steel. Finished by rubbing back lightly and several coats of furniture wax, which give the rust a lovely, glossy patina as if rubbed smooth by hand over the years.

I don’t think this house has zero curb appeal. I also don’t think you have to build forwards to add to the appeal. For me the main thing is the front path and the front door: Assuming budget allows I would spend on hard landscaping- I would put block paving on the roadside gravel area, remove the current steps and front path and instead have a extra wide path (3m wide by the door and driveway reducing to no less than 1.8m in the middle) that curves from the corner of the drive to the front door. I would raise the path to front door level and slope it gently to avoid any need for steps. I would also build this path in the same block paving you choose for the gravel area. If the garden is lower either side of the path then fill the gap with shrubs. I would also consider replacing the front door- in my humble opinion the current door looks dated and if a replacement had a matching panel to the right where the wood cladding is currently the door would appear larger and have more presence. You might also consider a matching garage door. I would also spend on lighting the path and putting downlights in the soffits to light the house at night. A few LEDs will cost very little a year to run all evening. You could also consider having the roof cleaned.

Interesting you’re all come back with this as this was what I originally wanted to do. I wanted to paint all of the beams in a cream/taupe colour and do the window frames, front door and garage doors to match. There’s a couple of reasons why we aren’t doing this (for now anyway): there’s actually a lot more black on the house than just those beams-if you look closer there’s loads of black rafters (I think they’re called that) just under the roof tiles so the job of painting this is a huge one. The windows are UPVC so would either have to be replaced or professionally spray painted. We actually had the windows spray painted white on the inside of the house so we know how much this will roughly cost and it just isn’t in the budget at the moment. I think if we painted everything and left the windows the orange/brown it wouldn’t be a good look! (I really don’t like the current colour of the windows and they’re ruining all my plans! Lol) Our thought process in the end was if we just get the new front door in the same colour as the windows for now; then if we do have the money one day to do all of the colour changes we want then we would just get the front door sprayed too as this will be a composite door. I’ve just popped outside to take a few more pictures of the house so you can see what I mean about the black ‘rafters’. (Ignore the renovation mess!)
