TV ontop of fireplace. Better together or apart?

Views and real life experiences please. I have a lounge with only 1 wall (remaining walls are glass doors/ windows the other leads onto a kitchen). I have to use my 1 wall VERY wisely!

Do I put the fireplace in the corner of my 1 wall, and my tv in the centre of the wall thereby creating a rather off-balance room. Or do I stick to beautiful symmetry of centred TV ontop of centred fire. BUT with this option I have the following problems:

1. I dont use the fireplace for most of the year, but im stuck looking all year round it if it's in the centre

2. Heat from the fire may cause problems to the tv?

3. Repeat of number 1 above! hahaha

Would a bioethanol fire be an option?

I don't have one but all the companies selling them (!) suggest a tv is fine as long as you have some form of “shelf“ between the fire and tv

many of them are low too so no neck ache whilst watching tv

I had a TV in my bedroom for most of my adult life, because I was living in a house share or a studio. Whenever I've lived in my own home - which I have for the last fifteen years - and had a separate bedroom, I've not had a TV in the bedroom. I haven't had one for the last eight years and I would hate to have one again. It's sort of intrusive and it has a negative impact on my sleep. I have a radio next to my bed and will listen to that quietly because it can be soothing. I love watching TV, just not where I sleep.

Posted this on another version of this thread but this one seems to be getting going better! Is there scope to add some curtains at the windows? Even if she doesn't pull them across they will make the room look and feel better. If she can hang anything on the wall, a mirror would help. Or get a floor standing mirror to lean against the wall to reflect light and give the feeling of space. Might be too heavy and expensive though. An adjustable desk lamp can be pointed up, on to the wall to cast more light into the room. A bowl of fruit on the table will look good and maybe some books neatly stacked. In fact I've just realised that's what's missing - books! A stack of books, or some lined up along the skirting boards, or a cheap bookcase. Flowers always help a room, but cut flowers will add to the budget, so maybe some dried grasses in an elegant vase? I hope your daughter settles in OK and finds her apartment becomes homely and welcoming. Angie

Hi Dela, I had a quick look on Etsy and the amount of art they have for sale runs into the thousands (Quantity not price!). I searched Teal seascapes and loads came up. I took screen shots of these few, but do have a look as art is such a personal thing. I’ve bought several bits and bobs on there and they are very reliable, although I always pay via PayPal, just in case!

Christine, wow, that's a ton of ideas, thank you very much! We already thought of these sockets with USB included, and will definitely get those for all desk and bed areas. It's such a small improvement but I am so excited about it already! Also love your suggestions for hiding cables. I hope we won't have to (rather have all cables in the walls and have them come out where we want them to) but if that's not possible, in particular around the fireplace area then this will be very valuable, so thank you. Not so concerned about soundproofing the floor - we live in a similar flat right now, hardwood floors and underfloor heating, and we walk around in socks with no issues. It is more the kids' bedrooms that are facing the fireplace that I am concerned with. Son is playing online games with kids from around the world and well, yes, there is a lot of screaming that comes with that. Sitting right in front of the doors won't be very relaxing for us when he yells on top of his lungs "FXCK YOU!!!" (and yes, I do tell him off). I love the partitioning, wall slider, shelves gallery - definitely something to investigate later. I think we may have to move in first to get a feel of the space. I don't want to cram it with furniture and create a maze if not needed. But it may help regulate the space and make it cosier. As for the TV placement, if you have a look at the photo I just shared, we are thinking about either having a TV shelf with a smaller TV (not 55 inch as we have now) or maybe a bracket or pole solution which we mount to the side of the fireplace if the brickwork (I believe it's bricks, will need to check) does support it. This would allow us to move the TV set around so that we can watch from different angles. But when looking at the fireplace as it is right now I think the architect envisioned the TV mounted right there on top.

Option 1 definitely! Use bioethanol or electric. You don’t have to have the heat function on, you can just have the flame effect on!

What about side by side TV and fire?

Also another vote from me for an electric fire. I chose an Evonics inset fire because I can use it year round because you don’t have to have the heat on to enjoy the flames. Plus if I wanted a gas fire this big it would be too hot for the room. Gas fires are deeper too so use up more square footage.
