Restoring Elm Floorboards Help

Please help, we have been restoring our Elm wood floor boards having cleaned them up and sanded them (first error as now some nails are poking through a bit despite it being a light sand )
We have had to repair and replace a few with other slightly different coloured elm boards that you can see in the picture. We love the look of the floor as it is but want to unify the finish with oil wax or something. We have tried English oak which has a tint to it on this board as you can see but it’s a bit false looking. Are their any professionals or experienced renovators out there that can advise us? Georgina, you are most welcome. Yes, I saw that you said in your initial query that you had lacquered them and did not want to sand it all back, hence my suggestion for the least messy option (otherwise yes would be better to sand it all back etc etc like others have said but let's be practical not perfectionists). Yes a tinted lacquer, yes I'm sure you can buy it, I've mixed it myself but best to just buy one but beware not to go too far the other way and take tiny steps. Paint a bit that's going to be under a desk etc and leave it for days to dry and look at it in different light etc. It's not ideal, but I suggest you use the same clear lacqer and add a tiny bit of tinted one because you are painting on a darker colour already so experiment with small amounts of each, keeping track of how much you have put in. (I mix my own wall colours so have just learnt to give it a go in small portions). You also mention wanting a black and white rug, these colours will clash with the wood (colour theory) and make it look even more orange so best to use a colour that tones more. It's hard to tell the exact colour from the photos but go with warmer deeper colours which will then tone down the orange rather than clash with it and make it look cheap and more orange. So if you want to go dark then a rich chocolate brown with some creams, khaki and even a bit of burnt orange for example will make the orange in the floorboards recede.

have you considered a wallpaper... I know I often mention wallpapers but they are amazingly resillient if you get a good one. I have a paper in my own hall that has been up for 9 years and has outlived the paint by a long chalk. Wipeable, and strong, and there are so many that have a little bit of opalescence or metallics that will bounce a bit more light about. Doesn't have to be a pattern, could be a texture to keep in your colour palette. I agree with those who have suggested white for the woodwork , a slight off white that is. Unless your house is brand new or has been replastered perfectly brilliant whites will show off all the lumps and bumps. so stick to a milky/creamy whites for warmth or a grey white if you want a cool scheme. striped runners will make the hall seem longer if you want to give that impression and a large mirror in the narrowest part is helpful for illusionary width. ( also helpful for that last minute check theres no toothpaste round your mouth on the way out the door) don't put anthing like coat hooks along the narrow part or it'll be like navigating through the wardrobe to Narnia. but a high shelf might be useful

Thanks mark so much for your kind comment. Lauren, I haven't managed to get round to it yet, but will let you know as soon as I do. Having a nightmare at the moment as found out the gable wall was dangerous so having it rebuilt at the moment, which has preoccupied me somewhat. There is no end wall on the house at the moment. When I had my engineered wood floor installed, the skirting did not have to come off, they undercut the skirting boards instead. It means the skirting is very slightly narrower but the job is very neat, professional and doesn’t have to have beading which would cheapen the look. This may be worth looking into if your 1st choice was a wooden floor.
