To darken ceiling or not

you know that feeling when you want to do something ‘out there’ but your more than a little apprehensive?! I’ve read conflicting advice regarding small dark lounges.. go dark & bold or opt for bright & light!

so I’m borderline ATM.. small steps. I painted the chimney wall in Brassica (Farrow &Ball).. and I’ve decided I’m going to paint all the walls in this colour. Question is, the ceiling?! pale or in the same colour? Maybe the walls could be even darker? TV is questionable.., I’m tempted to get rid and add a small armchair, buy a small TV and table.? And, I’m keen on a large rug..

pics are not great as bathroom, dining, kitchen & lounge are all on the go right now. The room is holding furniture for elsewhere.

the room is a little over 4 x 3 metres and ceiling height is 270cm.

Caroline, my bedroom has one wall painted in Brassica and the other three in Purbeck Stone. The ceiling is Pointing and the woodwork is Shadow White - all F&B shades colour-matched by Johnstones. The room is about the same size as your living room but has a very small window so I decided to make it cosy and calm rather than try to make it brighter. The lampshades, curtains and bedding are similar colours as I wanted to stay safe!

I’m not sure I’d paint all my walls in Brassica when we re-decorate, it bounces a lovely warm glow to the other walls.The carpet and headboard are actually grey - the brassica and bedding make it a warmer almost brown grey. It’s so hard to describe colours, I’m not very good at colours (except in the garden) it I had a lot of help from a lovely lady in the F&B shop.

I have a lilac wall (Laura Ashley Pale Iris) in my bedroom, the ceiling is brilliant white and the rest of the walls are Dulux Egyptian Cotton. I’m not keen on dark ceilings, but some people are, so each to their own!

If a home feels "dark", first consider changing the one thing it's lacking: LIGHT. Choose window coverings that can be opened completely; swags and tie-backs may feel "appropriate", but always compromise daylight. The bedroom is a great example of what to avoid. The drapes not only block light, they also shrink the room by blocking your view out. (As does the bed canopy.) Maximize the reflectivity of surfaces, especially floors. Light comes down into the room and bounces up. Imagine your photo's if the floors were light wood; natural or washed. (While the bedroom carpet is light, it will not reflect light the way wood will.) If the deck of that beautiful veranda is painted white, it will be 100 percent lighter and seem 50 percent larger; as would the room adjacent. (Consider painting the ceiling there a light hue to give it a feeling like sky.) Don't overlook improving the electric lighting. the work of a knowledgeable lighting designer will surprise you. You're absolutely right to resist painting the woodwork. It would be a waste of beauty that will never be matched by laminates and even new wood products. Make the house more of what it IS, or leave it for someone who appreciates it. (The photo of the entry is a great illustration of poor choices. The white paint removes all connection between the door & the art glass, the walls and the stairway, and the interior from the beautiful surroundings.)

Hi Annie, Here are few options within your budget you could replace this fitting with. We would suggest 2 or 3 fittings evenly spaced out to add more light to the room, like in this example photo. 1 Light Merle Wall Light - Smoke Hula Decorative Wall Light - Aluminium Kimi Wall Spotlight - 1 Light - Satin Chrome Alternatively you could install recessed down-lights or go for LED strips, but this would be more costly. what colour for the walls?

I would paint it a lighter version of the wall tile so you need to work out the undertone of the tile colour. I used F&B Skimming Stone in one of my bathrooms as the tile had a slight violet undertone and I used Strong White in another as the overall look was cooler. Get some samples and paint on large pieces of card.

Hallways/stairs colour- Help!

I’m reluctant to paint the bannisters anything but white and varnish as that’s what they’ve always been and I like the smoothness of hundreds of hands touching them (it’s my grandmothers house and the house my mother was born in...) but am keen to paint the stairs. The bottom stairs currently have FB light blue on them which is nice but I was hoping to go a little darker without darkening too much- maybe Oval Room blue? And my other question is about skirting boards- I’d be inclined to do them white but would that look strange on the stairs if I have painted stairs, white skirtings and then painted walls up to dado height? Thanks again for help... painting really is the hardest bit...!

I would leave the ceiling white. It’s nice to have a contrast in the joints.

My sister painted her ceiling the same colour as the walls (blue). Never again. Shortly after doing it they didn’t like it and it wasn’t a case of a quick flick over with the roller putting white on a colour, so perhaps this is also something to bear in mind. It took them 3 coats!

I love coloured ceilings but not keen on walls and ceilings the same colour. I did it in a corridor which doesn’t get light and as the ceilings are lower than the rest of the house I wanted to increase the height. It was a mistake (for me anyway).

there’s nothing to say the ceiling has to be pure white though, something with less contrast would work better IMO. I also love wallpaper on a ceiling but that’s probably more of a nightmare to correct if you don’t love it 😂
